On the Labor Scene....

With so many laws continually being thrust upon businesses, we wanted to start a little update employer's might find useful.  This month we highlight the California Fair Pay Act.  As you may or may not know, our State has prohibited an employer from paying its employees less than that of employees of the opposite sex for equal work under the California Equal Pay Act.  On October 6th, of last year, Governor Brown signed the California Fair Pay Act (SB 358), which fortifies the Equal Pay Act in a number of ways.

Chairwoman's Message

Greetings Members,

Another busy month for our Chamber is on tap for August.   Our monthly luncheon speakers will be sharing with us vital information about the upcoming special election ballot measure that is so important to our City.  I am hopeful that you will all attend, bring your questions, and plan to get them answered.  The meeting is scheduled for August 10th at the Hellenic Center in Lancaster, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

A major activity in our community is the AV Fair which begins August 19th and runs through the 28th.  As Chamber members we are getting into the spirit of the Fair with our Dress and Decorate Contest, and you will not want to miss out on this opportunity to win tickets to the Fair for your employees, should you be the winning business.  Applications for the contest are available from the Chamber Office through August 12th.  Please take time to join in the fun and engage your employees in dressing for the Fair!

Another event that we have planned around the Fair is the annual AV Fair Parade.  This event takes place on August 20th beginning at 9:00 a.m.  Thanks to Director Luis Garibay and his committee for planning a parade that is sure to delight young and seasoned alike!  Your help in making this a successful kick-off event for the Fair will be appreciated.

Hey, have you made arrangement to show off your business on "Minding Your Business" with Chris Spicher?  What a great way to tell the community about your business and why doing business with you is of importance to our listeners.  Please contact Chris to make arrangements to appear on his show, and for sure we really thank Chris for his efforts on behalf of all of us.  Thanks, Chris.

Don't forget to join us for our Business-4- Breakfast at our new location, the AM Café on 10th Street.  The pancakes are indeed a treat, and the company of our fellow members is so special.  The next meeting is August 25th beginning at 7 a.m.  Be sure to bring your business cards, and plan to have a great time getting to know your fellow Chamber members.

Thanks to Anna for her help in setting up the combined Chambers night at the JetHawks game on July 22nd.  I would have to say my first pitch was certainly nothing to marvel at, but it wasn't as embarrassing as I expected either.  I will be keeping my day job for now as I don't see professional baseball in my future.  Thanks for the opportunity, Anna, to allow all of our Chambers time to work together at this fun event.

I am looking forward to seeing you at all the upcoming events this month.  Remember together we can accomplish much for our community and our business, so please participate.

Sincerely,
Regina Rossall, Chairwoman of the Board

Young Professionals ARE Important...

Do you have young professionals working for you?  Are you playing a role in mentoring and developing these professionals to become the leaders and managers of tomorrow?

A clear understanding and appreciation of this dynamic group of people will help guide you as your business embraces a 21st-century growth model.   They definitely don't view the world in the same way the "good old boys" used to (and still do!).   "Joining" is not appealing ... "associating" is.   And today's technology has helped redefine the meaning of "networking" ... for them.

Most of us recognize the need to reach out to our young professionals.   We understand the critical importance of bringing them into the mix because, by definition, they are our future.  But what pro-active steps are you taking.
Because technology and social media are so important to this group, we tend to forget about teaching them how to build relationships, how to negotiate, or close a deal.  It's still not all about Facebook, Snapchat, or Twitter, the importance of a face to face connection is still how most people like to do business.
But where do we start?  Your Chamber can help!  Bring them to a Chamber Luncheon, or a Business-4- Breakfast.  Have them develop a 30 second elevator speech, and then use it at a Chamber event.  Another great way to help them grow is providing some Lancaster Chamber of Commerce E-Learning classes.  Have them try a class like: Successful Negotiation, Basics of Leadership, and Managing Time, Working as a Team or Empowerment!  Most of these classes are under $25, and can be found on our Homepage under ChamberClasses or use this link:

You can assign classes to your employees and track their progress.  Look for a class or two for yourself as well!  There are a variety of different subjects to choose from.

Employers Required to E-File Paperwork with Employment Development Department

This requirement will expand to all employers beginning January 1, 2018.

Unemployment Insurance and Electronic Reporting

AB 1245 (Cooley; D-Rancho Cordova, Statues of 2015) requires electronic reporting for unemployment insurance reports submitted to the EDD. It also requires employers to remit contributions for unemployment insurance taxes by electronic funds transfer.

Any employer required under existing law to electronically submit wage reports and/or electronic funds transfer to the EDD will remain subject to those requirements.

The EDD encourages employers to enroll now in e-Services for Business so they can start reporting online before this mandate begins.

For more information about the e-file and e-pay mandate, please visit: www.edd.ca.gov/EfileMandate

Benefits of Electronic Filing and Payments

  • Increases data accuracy.
  • Protects data through encryption, which is safer and more secure than paper forms.
  • Reduces paper and mailing costs.
  • Eliminates lost mail.
  • Faster processing of returns and payments.

File and Pay Electronically with e-Services for Business

Employers can use e-Services for Business to comply with the e-file and e-pay mandate. e-Services for Business is a fast, easy, and secure way to manage your employer payroll tax accounts online. With e-Services for Business, you can:

  • Register for an employer payroll tax account number.
  • File returns and reports.
  • Make payroll tax deposits and pay other liabilities.
  • View and update account information.
  • And more!

Waiver

This mandate contains a waiver provision for employers who are unable to electronically submit employment tax returns, wage reports, and payroll tax deposits.

The EDD will accept waiver requests from employers beginning July 2016. To request a waiver, employers must complete and submit the E-file and E-pay Mandate Waiver Request (DE 1245W).

Here are the ways to obtain a DE 1245W:

  • Download theDE 1245W from the EDD website.
  • Contact the Taxpayer Assistance Center at 888-745-3886.
  • Visit the nearest Employment Tax Office.

Waiver requests can be submitted by mail or fax:

Mail:

Employment Development Department

Document and Information Management Center

PO Box 989779

West Sacramento, CA 95798-9779

Fax:     916-255-1181

Employers will be notified by mail if their waiver is approved or denied. An approved waiver will be valid for one year. Upon the expiration of the approval period, an employer must start to electronically file and pay, or submit a new waiver request to avoid a noncompliance penalty.
