Ensemble Series presents Texas State Symphonic Choir and Texas State Symphony Orchestra performing "Requiem" by W.A. Mozart completed by Robert Levin, conducted by Dr. Jonathan Babcock

Many will remember the events leading to Mozart's death as represented in the 1984 period drama, Amadeus: five months before his death, Mozart was commissioned by an anonymous stranger to write a Requiem Mass.  Delirious with fever and convinced he was writing his own funeral music, Mozart died before completing his Requiem leaving it to his student - Franz Xaver Sssmayr -- to hastily complete the score. Texas State presents the thrilling revised completion by Harvard University professor and Mozart scholar, Robert Levin. Open to the public; Admission tickets ($15* general admission/$8* students, senior citizens & military (with ID), * plus $2 processing fee) may be purchased in advance at http://www.txstatepresents.com or at the door during the 30 minutes preceding the concert; seating will begin at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the program on a first come, first serve basis.

Bobcats Give Back
Blu Cares: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity

Blu Cares is a program created by the students of the Pi Xi chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated at Texas State. It's designed to help residents and families in the local San Marcos community who need daily household duties done, but can't do it themselves because of a disability or age. Tasks include: indoor/outdoor cleaning, painting, gardening and many others based on the person they are assisting. The name "Blue Cares" comes from the fraternity's colors (blue and white) and to show the San Marcos community that they really do care! They recently helped a local San Marcos resident with yard work. Here is an interview with James Jones, Director of Programming for Bl Cares.

Q: What did you enjoy most about helping?

A: We loved seeing Ms. Dolores' face when she came out to a brand new yard. She loves to garden, but her yard had not been tended to because she was not able to and didn't have enough people to do it. She almost didn't recognize her yard and was so grateful for our help. Also, Ms. Dolores has done so much for the San Marcos community, so it was time for someone to do something for her this time!

Q: What does giving back to the San Marcos community mean to you?

A: To us giving back to the community doesn't mean just writing a check and donating it to an organization in the city. Yes, a check is always nice but to us it means actually going out into the community and seeing the direct impact we have on the person or people we are helping. It is so nice seeing the smiles and gratitude of the people we have helped. We live in this city too, so it wouldn't be right to us if we didn't give back to our community.

Q: How important do you believe it is for Bobcats to get involved and volunteer?

A: It's very important for Bobcats to get involved with volunteer work because we make up such a big part of the population in San Marcos and we should be giving back to our community because we live here too. Also, Bobcats are college students, so volunteer work looks great on a resume but also it teaches them skills they may not learn in the classroom. Teamwork, gratitude, and how to not forget about the people around you are things we learn when volunteering.

Bobcat for a Day: High schoolers spend the day as  Texas State students!

More than 200 area high school juniors spent the day "shadowing" Texas State students during the recent Sixth Annual Bobcat For A Day program.
Students from San Marcos, Lehman, Hays, and Lockhart High schools, as well as Katherine Ann Porter School. Live Oak Academy and Phoenix Academy, toured campus, attended classes, ate lunch with their Bobcat mentors for the day.
The high school students were matched with Bobcats in majors they were interested in.
The program is co-sponsored by Student Government and the Office of Community Relations.
