Fall College Awareness Tours
This fall, the Office of Community Relations at Texas State University hosted every San Marcos CISD sixth grader on campus for full day of college awareness and career activities. The program is supported by
Texas State University, with no cost to the schools or students.
Sixth graders from Miller and Goodnight Middle Schools have visited TxSt annually for the past seven years. These tours benefit the students, preparing them for careers and/or collegeand informing the sixth graders and their parents about what they need to do NOW to be academically and financially prepared to enter higher education when they graduate from high school.

STAR Park research facility opens
Texas State University officially opened the first building at the Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Park on Nov. 9.
STAR Park is a 38-acre site hosting Texas State's first incubator building, STAR One.
Dedicated to the university's research and commercialization efforts, STAR One, a 20,000-square-foot facility, will serve as a technology incubator/accelerator for start-up and early-stage businesses. For more information click here.

Mayor honors IFC for local service activities
The Interfraternity Council at Texas State University, dedicated to fraternal ideals, spirit and leadership, recently sponsored a canned food drive to benefit the Hays County Food Bank.
Members of IFC include Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Alpha Order, Kappa Sigma, Omega Delta Phi, Phi Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Sigma Tau Gamma, Theta Chi, who are proud to work in collaboration to support the needs of the San Marcos community.
Mayor Daniel Guerrero honored the group at a recent city council meeting for their outreach and community service.

MLK Freedom March set for Jan. 22
The San Marcos community is invited to Texas State's observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 22, 2013 at 6 p.m.
The event includes the annual MLK Freedom March and Celebration Program to honor the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an American civil rights leader. The MLK Freedom March begins at Old Main and concludes in LBJ Student Center Ballroom. 
San Marcos High School, Gary Job Corps and Texas State students, organizations, faculty and staff reenact a march similar to those conducted during the Civil Rights Movement.
After the march, participants enjoy a celebration program held in the LBJSC Ballroom that honors Dr. King, civil rights leaders and their impact on our civil liberties.

Almost 3,000 graduates walked the stage last week to receive their undergraduate degrees.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT
MAES gives back!
MAES, the Mexican American Engineers and Scientist student organization, has stepped up to the plate this semester, volunteering for local neighborhood beautification projects and providing hands-on science activities for area youth.
MAES is a nationally-recognized organization devoted to increasing the number of minority science and engineering students at Texas State University-San Marcos.
"We are enjoying service opportunities here in San Marcos," said Jesus Palacios, MAES president. "Giving back to the San Marcos community is important to us."
Members of the group recently devoted their time to a service project, yard work at an elderly man's home in the Castle Forest neighborhood.
The group also hosted hands-on science activities during Discover Texas State and is planning activities for the upcoming Science Fairs at Crockett and Mendez Elementary Schools.
