WHAT DOES ST. ANDREW'S MEAN TO ME?
Has God blessed you through any of the work or ministries of St. Andrew's?  Would you be willing to share that with others?  Each month we want to give an opportunity to someone to express what St. Andrew's means to them.  Let Fr. Paul or Kathy Andres know if you wouldlike to tell your story!

CELEBRATING YOUTH AND TEEN MINISTRIES
SUNDAY, MAY 18 AT 10:00 A.M.

Sunday, May 18, has been designated by the Diocese as Procter Summer Camp Sunday.  Wear your camping clothes to church to mark the occasion!  We will also have a visit from the band Attaboy, one of the bands from Spark in the Park Teenfest.

All loose plate and undesignated offering this Sunday will go toward youth and teen ministries.
DIOCESAN NEWS
Bishop actively supports Ohio marriage equality case

The following press release was distributed to major news outlets on May 1:

Because we believe that all children of God deserve the same rights and protections under the law, the Diocese of Southern Ohio and the Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal, along with many other bishops from Episcopal dioceses throughout the country, have filed amici curiae briefs in support of the marriage equality case of Obergefell v. Kasich currently pending in the Sixth Circuit court.

The case involves Jim Obergefell, partnered for more than twenty years with John Arthur, who became terminally ill with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).  Obergefell and Arthur needed to be legally married and Obergefill listed as surviving spouse on the death certificate in order to be buried together in Arthur's family plot. The couple chartered a private medical jet and flew from Cincinnati to Baltimore, Maryland, in order to be legally married.  Owing to the fact that Arthur was too ill to even leave the plane, they were married in the plane on the runway. Arthur died while the suit was pending.  Obergefell ultimately won a permanent injunction ordering the State of Ohio to list him on Arthur's death certificate as the surviving spouse even though the state does not currently recognize same-sex marriage, which Governor John Kasich is now appealing.

The Diocese of Southern Ohio was one of the first Episcopal dioceses to create an approved blessing for same-sex unions. Like the Episcopal Church as a whole, it places great emphasis on the ritual observance of the life cycle, and its rites relating to dying and death are justly known for their theological depth and pastoral sensitivity.

Bishop Breidenthal is the Ninth Bishop of Southern Ohio, elected in 2006.  He has written extensively about faith, including the issues raised by same-sex unions. Episcopal clergy are given significant training in grief counseling and funeral preparation, and it is expected that they will perform those offices with proficiency and care, with particular attention being paid to supporting family members of the deceased with no distinction being made between same-sex and opposite-sex marriages.

SUNDAY, MAY 11 (MOTHERS' DAY):  SPECIAL MEN'S CHORUS!  All men, young and old, are invited to come at 9:00 a.m. for a rehearsal.

SUNDAY, JUNE 1 is MUSIC MINISTRY CELEBRATION SUNDAY and the last choir Sunday for the 2013-2014 season.

This year the theme is In Our Music.  It will be a series of Reflections on Music with Responses of Music.

ADJUSTMENT TO PARENTING CLASS SCHEDULE:

Lisa Kelly, school psychologist/behavioral specialist, has postponed her visit due to conflicts. We are looking to rescheduling her talk (Developing Self) and follow-up discussions from some of our speakers this fall. Please take this time as an opportunity to meet and greet the members of the band, Attaboy,  during fellowship.

REGIONAL CONFIRMATION SERVICE WITH BISHOP BREIDENTHAL
SATURDAY, MAY 31 AT 11:00 A.M.
ST. JAMES EPISCOPAL CHURCH, ZANESVILLE

In the early centuries of the Church, congregations would gather together at Easter for the rite of initiation administered by the bishop. There was something - there is something - about sharing those significant and transformative moments with the rest of the Church.  In 2014, we will have opportunities in four areas of the diocese to celebrate together the rites of Holy Baptism and Confirmation, Reception or Reaffirmation. The renewal of our commitment as followers of Jesus is no small thing. "Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at their Baptism," the bishop prays. "Send them forth in the power of the Spirit to perform the service you set before them....Let your Holy Spirit be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of your Word, that they may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Members of our confirmation class will join with others from area churches for the sacrament of Confirmation, for Reception into the Episcopal Church, and for Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant. Candidates for confirmation from St. Andrew's are Amber Houck, Eve Rogers, and Justin Wright. Ann Salladin and Joanie Thorn will be renewing their Baptismal Covenants.

PRISON MINISTRY

Do you have a few minutes to write a letter to a prisoner? Or would you like to visit prisoners who have few or no visitors? Nick England gave a 2-week presentation on his decades' long ministry to prisoners. You can be a part of that ministry too. See Nick or Fr. Paul to get started.

"DAY BY DAY' DEVOTIONALS FOR ALL

One of the men's Emmaus Share Groups has purchased 100 devotionals for you to use during these next three months-May, June and July. Please pick up your copy at the parish hallway desk. Already have one? Give you copy to a friend or family member.

"Our purpose in sharing the daily devotions is giving back to our church family something we have found filled with God moments.  It is a great way to pass along God's word to fellow workers and neighbors."
