FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

Congratulations to the many producers who joined us for the Adobe Premiere Post-Production classes. Everyone had a good time working on the new system. We received a lot of comments about how easy the learning curve was transitioning from Avid. We wish you happy editing on your forthcoming projects!

TCtv will be bring back the Producer Education Series soon. For those not familiar, on Friday nights staff host a seminar that emphasis one specific topic. In the past we have featured editing, lighting, special effects, shooting with green screen, and audio enhancements. If you are interested in learning more tricks and tips, keep your Friday nights open.

It's still a few months away, but make sure to save the date on Friday, Aug. 5 for the Annual Back to TCtv BBQ. This is always a great time to share your ideas and to meet other producers in a informal setting. Not to mention the great food and the excellent grill master! It will be here before you know it.

To the right is an overview of what's in this issue. Check out the articles and events, and join us as often as you can. We look forward to seeing you.  It's easy to sign-up to automatically receive Take One. Just go to:

MEET THE PRODUCER

Tatyana O'Toole has been a certified field producer for 15 months. She is currently enrolled in the studio production workshop.

She is interested in producing shows that deal with crafting and cooking, as those are her favorite hobbies. She is also interested in producing nature shows. As a still photographer, she photographs sunsets, sunrises and landscapes. Being able to incorporate still pictures in a show would be a plus.

Tatyana is very interested in working with other producers. She says "That's how I've become really good friends with other producers, and helping out is a great way to learn new things." When asked if she would welcome producing help, she says, "Yea, why not? I'm not greedy; I can share. All are welcome, if you are interested."

She does not have a favorite position on a shoot, and is open to doing whatever job needs to be done for the best production. "Getting more experience is the important thing. Place doesn't make people; people make the place. What I'm trying to say is that the staff is an incredible, great team. It's so fun to be here and attend the classes. You guys have been very helpful. It's the nicest, coolest place. It's really great that the City of Torrance has such a great program. I only wish more Torrance residents would participate and take advantage of the program. Come and explore Torrance."

What Shots to Consider As a Director

When directing a talk show, there are many different ways to set up the show open. You may have seen the host walk out to deliver a monologue, or sometimes pre-recorded footage is used with the show's opening credits.  As a director, you are in control of how you want to start your show, but also what camera shots to take during the entire show, and when.

When selecting shots, it is important to consider what is being conveyed at the moment of the shot. Many times you will want to almost always have the camera pointed at the person who is talking. More...
Using Two Audio Inputs

When shooting with the JVC 150 you may notice that the audio on the camera offers two microphone (XLR) inputs. You may find yourself only using one of those inputs. But think for a moment, if there are two audio input maybe there is a good reason for it.

One major example of using both inputs is to use one for the main audio source and the other for ambient audio. Your main source would be your host while the ambient sound would capture the sound of the event or room environment where you are shooting. More...
Expendables

that help a production. Some examples are gaffers and paper tape, black wrap, lighting gels, diffusion and C-47s (wooden clothes pins). Most camera stores will have a selection of these products.

Gaffers tape is a cloth tape with great adhesive properties, and can be used to quickly put a poster on a wall, or tape down power cords and audio cables. Lighting gels can help you change the color of light, while diffusion and frost will soften and diffuse a light source.  More...
