FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

TCtv producers, the installation of the high-definition post-production suites is finished, and staff has been enjoying the flexibility the Adobe Premier software suite has to offer. We know you will all be thrilled with this change. Because Adobe is new software, we will be offering editing workshops to get you up to speed. All field producers will be required to complete one of the workshops in order to use the post-production suites. The workshops will begin in April, and will take place over two nights from 7 to 9 p.m. You will receive a schedule of dates soon. Don't worry, there will be plenty of workshop dates.

For our Audio Recording producers, a new club is forming. The TCtv Audio Club will be a great way to learn and share new techniques and tricks. It also will be a terrific way to get involved with your fellow producers. The club has been started by one of our own very motivated producers. We have discussed several ideas for the TCtv Audio Club, and I know it will be a lot of fun. If you are interested in becoming a member, contact TCtv.

To the right is an overview of what's in this issue. Check out the articles and events, and join us as often as you can. We look forward to seeing you.  It's easy to sign-up to automatically receive Take One. Just go to:

MEET THE PRODUCER

David Van Dusen is a certified producer in field, studio and audio recording. He has been creating shows with TCtv for just over one year.

David originally got involved with TCtv because of the church he attends. "I wanted to record the sermons and other activities that were going on at the church," he said. "I joined TCtv and went through the programs and just got fascinated with it so much."

David is so excited about what can be created that he's been telling others about the opportunities at TCtv. He has brought in several new producers. He also is very interested in helping and learning from more seasoned producers on their shoots.

When asked about needing help on his shoot David said, "Absolutely, I recently did a shoot and other producers came to assist me, and I believe in helping others to create productions as great as we can. My favorite position is camera, but I am open to working on any position."

"I'd like to say something (else) ... The staff here at TCtv are extremely qualified. I've been very impressed with the leadership and instruction. I think this is an amazing opportunity for anyone in the Torrance boundaries to become involved if they have an interest in television."

White Balance

Ever notice the colors on your video are a little too orange or too blue? This could show you are not white balancing your camera before filming.

Light, has different color temperatures, whether it is coming from an indoor lamp, overhead fluorescent tubes, an LED light kit or the sun. These color temperatures are measured in degrees of Kelvin. The typical color temperature of household incandescent bulbs and tungsten studio lights are in the range 2700-3200 Kelvin. These lights illuminate a "warm" or orange look. The sun is closer to 5600 K, making it "cool" or more bluish in color.

Creating Your Custom Music

Where do you start when creating music? It depends on the composition. If it is a piano piece, that's easy. The piano is the only instrument, so we start and finish right there. But you may want to do more. You may want a band playing your music. Now we need to give that a little thought.

For most composers, drums seem to take the most thought. We all have played air drums before, but now it's time for the real thing. You can program each note a drummer would play in MIDI, but that could take some time. Luckily there is a short cut. Included with Pro Tools is a set of plugin instruments that play back samples of pretty much every instrument you would need, from pianos to guitars to orchestra strings. It's all there. There also is a large selection of drum loops.

Have you ever had trouble in the editing room? One scene just doesn't fit with the next scene. It happens to everyone. Here are some tips for better editing:

1. Check your ego at the door.
Filmmaking and editing is not about you; it is about creating a video for a target audience.  Knowing your audience will bring focus to how you want to convey information and make your edits.
