FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

The 2016 New Year has started off with a bang!

First we want to tell you about the permanent green screen lighting. Since we installed the green screen wall producers have been excited to use it. Green screen lighting can be finicky, and sometimes time-consuming to set-up. The good news is TCtv has acquired LED lights that will be positioned to permanently light the wall conserving in-studio time for all producers. So get those ideas flowing; it's time to shoot using the green screen.

We are all looking forward to the new workshop, "Audio Recording and Music Production." Producers have requested inclusion of this topic, so here we go!

The first workshop will be held in February, on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. for three weeks. If you are interested, contact us at TCtv@TorranceCA.Gov.

MEET THE PRODUCER

Victor Hernandez is a certified Field and Post-Production producer. He has been a TCtv producer for a month, and is planning to attend the Studio Workshop and the Audio Recording and Music Production Workshop in February.

My background is mental health, so I want to launch a mental health show with a doctor as the host. Back in the mid 90's, I was a marketing director for a cable company, so I was producing commercials for a cable system. I never thought I'd be back doing hands-on; but I'm looking forward to the experience.

I'm just getting started and receiving help from others, but one of my philosophies is 'by helping others you really learn, and it's always really good to give back.' I am interested in working with other producers and just hearing people's ideas. I think that's growth. In being a part of someone else's project I would have to say, 'How can I help?' that would be my disposition.
Congratulations to the January HD Field and Post-Production Workshop Graduates Thomas G. Reyes and Mark J. Reyes. We look forward to seeing new programming from these new producers will create!

The workshop will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. for three weeks. There will be a $35 deposit fee for the workshop. Thefirst class meeting will be on February 9th. What Not To Wear

Many producers spend a lot of time thinking about what their on-screen talent should wear. This is a good thing to think about, but believe it or not, what should be focused on more is "what not to wear." The image sensor on a camera responds to light differently than the human eye, so it will display those captured images differently.

The first thing to keep in mind is to ask your talent not to wear any bold patterns or tight stripes. These patterns can cause moire, which is when the pattern begins to blend into itself, while also having the tendency to flash. More...
7 Things To Do Before You Shoot

Shoot day is finally here and you are excited, but you can save a lot of stress and have a successful shoot by doing a few things to prepare.

Here is your success guide:

1.  Create Your Plan

Create a plan for what you are going to shoot, the types of shots needed, how talent will be mic'd, etc. Anyone who shows up at a production trying to "wing it" is putting the production at risk.

Studio Lights

When lighting your set in the TV studio, your first instinct might be to just turn on every light that is up on the grid and see what you have. But it is important to know the different types of lights and what is their purpose. The studio has three types of lights: Fresnels, Scoops and Broads. Fresnels are the most common lights you will see in the studio. More...
