2015 COASTAL CLEANUP DAY: TORRANCE BEACH

Coastal Cleanup Day, the largest volunteer day on the planet, is coordinated with the Ocean Conservancy, California Coastal Commission, L.A. Department of Beaches and Harbors and Heal the Bay. Torrance recognizes that by cleaning up Torrance Beach, the community is participating in this global effort to keep our oceans, water source, and community healthy. Partnering with American Honda and the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, Team Torrance will be again be participating for another consecutive year.

Scott Willoughby, program manager of the James Webb Space Telescope at Northrup Grumman, is working with an international team to develop a telescope that will orbit earth capturing images of infrared light. The telescope will be a million miles out (Lagange Orbit) and will orbit the sun at the same rate as the earth, so that our own planet will always orbit between the sun and the observatory. Using the telescope, we will be able to look at objects that have existed since practically the beginning of time and are so far away that their light was emitted just shortly after the Big Bang. Join Scott for this lecture about the telescope and all of the science behind it. VOLUNTEER AS A YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL COACH
The City of Torrance youth flag football program needs volunteer coaches. Coaches teach the basic rules of football, strategies and skills involved and encourage good sportsmanship and fair play. Their goal is to help provide an opportunity for children to play in an organized recreational youth sports league.
