TORRANCE LIBRARY - THE EARLY YEARS
SUNDAY, MARCH 9, 2013 | 4:30 - 8 PM
KEN MILLER RECREATION CENTER
|

In celebration of the Torrance Public Library's Centennial, the Torrance Historical Society and the Library are teaming together to present Torrance Library Early Years : Why in a house? This program is one of many in a series of events highlighting the 100 years of service the Library will provide to the community. The Torrance Historical Society venue is befitting for the event, as the Museum was built in 1936 with WPA funds and was home to the Main Library until 1978. Jamie Ruth Watson, Librarian and Historian, will discuss the early beginnings of public libraries in the United States. Jared Sidney Torrance's vision for his new community will be shared as will the history of Mrs. Isabel Torrance Henderson, who opened the first library in her living room in 1913. The presentation will be illustrated with photos and other original materials from the Torrance Historical Society Museum's archives. Refreshments will be served compliments of COSTCO. Seating is limited and will be available on a first-come/first-served basis, no reservations are required. For more information, Read More...
