Newsletter - So Much Catching Up to Do!
Greetings!

Well, I tried to write a newsletter last month. And then we got busy with back-in-school programs and rebuilding the front sidewalk. I tried again last week, and we got busy with pre-construction meetings and cleaning out the parts of the lower level that will become our new program room. And now it's Friday again. Time to get writing!

We have been busy. The new front garden was installed yesterday. The front sidewalk celebrated its two-week birthday this morning. And odd construction noises have been echoing up through the furnace vents all day. We're in one of our occasional phases where the library isn't a place of quiet respite so much as an active construction zone.

And we are excited about the progress! Our lower level renovation will add storage for the Friends, restrooms, and a program room that will hold 90 audience members plus presenter(s). The book sale area will receive flooring and have the support beams wrapped with drywall and everything will be freshly painted. Come New Year's we will be celebrating our new and improved lower level.

The building renovations are made possible by the generous support of the Caestecker Library Foundation, the Friends of the Library, and the Library Board of Trustees. Even with all this support, we still need you.

We need you to come to programs. We need you to check out books and movies and music, either physically or through your devices. We need your ideas and opinions to make this library best able to meet community needs.

And we need your donations. While the renovations are paid for, we need to fill our new room up with furniture that is comfortable, practical, portable, and easily stored. That's a tall order for a chair or table to fill, and consequently they don't come cheap.

We want to raise $25,000 by the end of the year to purchase 90 chairs and 25 tables. Letters for the Save a Seat for Me! fundraiser will be mailed out soon. Donations in any amount will be greatly appreciated and are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Please help if you can. And please stop in to see us soon.

Stepping From Herriot's Shadow

What is it about working with animals and their owners that turns some veterinarians into terrific storytellers and astute observers of life?

Dr. Bill Stork is the latest in a long and illustrious line of veterinary raconteurs. And we are very happy to welcome him for an afternoon of stories featuring both two-legged and four-legged acquaintances. In the words of Madison-area journalist Doug Moe, "Here is what Bill Stork knows: Just as the best road trips are seldom made on straight interstate highways, good stories sometimes dodge and weave and become something other than what they seemed at the outset..."

Wisconsin's answer to James Herriot will be at the library for stories and a book signing on Sunday, October 23, at 2:00 p.m. Please join us.
A new front garden was installed October 13th. Some native shrubs and perennials are featured.
Changes Inside
and Out

There has been a lot of work done at the library this year, most of it in preparation for our big lower level renovation. Let me take a couple of minutes to walk you through what we've done.

Earlier this summer Kinas Excavating installed a new drain system to handle roof run-off along the west side of the library. Last month all the concrete in front of the library was removed, the sub-base re-graded, and new concrete poured by Rock's Concrete. In order to gain enough slope, the traditional curb in front of the library was replaced with a rolling curb. And just this week Stuart's installed a new front garden after laying down a moisture barrier along the foundation.

Moisture is the issue, of course. Since we are putting a wonderful new program room below grade we have done all this work to maximize our chances of having this new space stay dry. An interior moisture barrier will go on the south and west walls of the lower level, too, before new walls are constructed and finished off. It's good for the building, and a sort of insurance for our investment. And once all the work is finished, I think you will agree it's worth it.

Check the library website for photos and construction updates as we head towards 2017!
