Newsletter - Spring at Last!

There is so much going on at the library this month I fear it's going to take two newsletters to handle it all. I hope to send out another missive on the 15th or 16th. Meanwhile, here's what we have going on during the first half of the merry month of May:

We are in the midst of celebrating Children's Book Week with an opportunity for area kids to vote for their favorite children's book character. We polled four through eight year olds to get our candidates. Voting runs through Saturday, May 7th. We'll announce the winner on the library's Facebook page.

With the warmer temperatures and arrival home of some of our "snow birds," Thursday Morning Conversations are back to being a weekly program. Hear from a variety of interesting folks as you enjoy coffee and donuts and good company in front of the fireplace. This month we will be talking about organic yards and legal issues and what pastors do besides preach on Sundays.

A majority of our evening programs this year have a green theme, and we have two more this month. Thursday evening, May 5, we welcome Krista Kamke of Golden Sands Resource Conservation and Development Council for a 6:30 program. You can read more about Krista's program below. Then on Tuesday, May 17th, Joy Perry of Wild Ones of the Fox Valley Area will answer the question "Why Native?" (as in, why plant native species in your garden?) in a 6:30 p.m. presentation.

Add in a book club discussion and knitting and coloring and LEGOs and the Friends Spring Book Sale and you will see why you will get another newsletter in a couple of weeks...  :)

See you soon!

Sure  it's pretty. But with purple loosestrife looks are deceiving. Learn how you can help to combat this invasive aquatic plant on Thursday, May 5.
Get it Under Control!

That pretty purple plant is taking over our wetlands, crowding out native vegetation, and leaving nothing for fish and other critters to eat. That's a big problem, but we may have a tiny solution - beetles that eat nothing but invasive purple loosestrife. We're growing them at the library this summer. And you can, too.

Find out about purple loosestrife, the Galenrucella beetles, our demonstration project, and more with Krista Kamke of Golden Sands Resource Conservation and Development Council. Krista is an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) specialist, dedicated to teaching residents about the many AIS plants and animals degrading Green Lake and Marquette Counties. Krista asked the library to be a demonstration site raising the loosestrife eating beetles, and she's looking for individuals who want to help grow enough hungry bugs to put a dent in the loosestrife population.

Want to learn more? Krista will be at the library on Thursday evening, May 5th, for a 6:30 presentation.
There are bargains to be had this Friday and Saturday at the Friends Spring Book Sale
It's Book Sale Time

One of Green Lake's most reliable signs of spring returns this weekend - city-wide garage sale day. The Friends of the Caestecker Library always hold a book sale on the same day, for people that love to bargain book and movie hunt. This year they have expanded both their offerings and their hours a bit to accommodate all the donations received in just the past two months. You have to see it to believe it.

Stop in, use the elevator (it still has that "new elevator" smell!), grab a basket or two, and shop to your heart's content. Hours for the Spring Book Sale are Friday, May 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 7, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In addition to books, movies, audio books, music, and puzzles (the usual), this sale includes holiday decor, a filing cabinet, games, t-shirts and sweatshirts, and a rather large collection of owls. More items arrive daily. We hope to see you this weekend!
