Newsletter - Happy October!

As I type, the lot on which the new American Legion Hall will be built is being cleared of the remains of the old hall. As one of my co-workers commented this morning, "wow - a lot can happen in one day!" We wish our neighbors the best in their construction project. A lot happens at the library every day, too, though it usually doesn't require heavy equipment.

October is one of those months that is filled with celebrations and commemorations and conferences (and candy, if we go for the alliteration). One of the best celebrations as far as the library is concerned is National Friends of Libraries Week, falling October 18-24 this year. It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the many things that the Friends of the Library do for us each year. It's also when the Friends hold their annual meeting. This year that auspicious event will be held over lunch at the Goose Blind on Wednesday the 21st. The meeting begins at 11:30 a.m., with lunch to follow. Cost of the meal is only $5.00, payable with your reservation at the library (by October 17th, please) or at the door. We hope to fill the restaurant with Friends! If you aren't already a member, joining the Friends is easy, and only $5.00 a year.

Two special programs are highlighted below. And November is shaping up to be another busy month, with the Dickens Festival and an opportunity to get involved in a MOOC (Massively Open Online Course) from UW-Madison with local discussions on the topic of Climate Change Policy and Public Health

Our Thursday Morning Conversations continue each week at 10:00. We look forward to welcoming Fran Hill from Town Square, members of the Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Service's Green Lake team, and volunteers from the Green Lake County Food Pantry as we move through October.

We're never at a loss for something to do here at the library. Please join us for as many events as you find to be of interest. And if we haven't yet hit on your favorite topics, please let me know.

It's easier to raise your own honeybees than you might think! Learn the basics at the library on Saturday, October 17th.
Getting Started With Beekeeping

Jeff Champeau, president of the East Central Wisconsin Beekeepers Association, is coming to the library on Saturday, October 17th, to give a 10:00 presentation that will have the whole town buzzing. It's on honey bees and beekeeping, the importance of pollinators, and as much more as time and audience interest will allow.

Bees are fascinating creatures in and of themselves, and are critically important our continued existence. No kidding! While many of us enjoy the honey and beeswax they produce, we don't often stop to think about what would happen without bees. Like, no crops (because the plants we grow for food need pollinators), and not much to feed livestock. We would be hard pressed to come up with enough food to eat without these hard-working insects.

Intrigued? We hope you will stop in and find out more!
Some of the many, many illustrations local artist Tom Schultz has produced for national bird guides
The Art of Field Guide Illustration

Tom Schultz comes across as rather quiet and unassuming, but he really is one amazing guy. Head of our local bird and nature club. Very involved in the effort to establish an eastern flock of critically endangered whooping cranes. Renowned wildlife artist. Active with the Green Lake Conservancy. Go-to illustrator for a number of birding field guides. And he lives just a few miles down the road from the library.

Tom is coming here on Saturday morning, October 24th, to give a 10:30 presentation on illustrating field guides. I can't imagine what it feels like to know that thousands and thousands of people rely on your drawings to identify the birds they see. Please join us for an art-filled morning.
