Newsletter - "It's Elementary!" Edition
|
Greetings!
It's nearly November, and therefore time for another literary festival. This time out we are celebrating one of the world's favorite detectives - Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was created by Arthur Conan Doyle, an Edinburgh-based writer and physician, who is said to have modeled his consulting detective after one of his medical colleagues.
Since their first appearance in over 125 years ago, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson have captured the imagination of mystery lovers worldwide. They have been portrayed on screens large and small, appeared in countless stories by authors both famous and obscure, have been parodied, cartooned, and swooned-over. Holmes and Watson are arguably more popular now than ever, with hit television series on both sides of the Atlantic and a current feature film series as well. High time, then, for the library to show the good doctor and the detective some love.
"It's Elementary!" is the name we chose for this series of events. Over the first two weeks of November we will have film (and television episode) screenings, "expert testimony" about Holmes, and an appearance by the famous detective himself. Check the events listing just to the right for dates and times. Need some more detail? You'll find it on the library web site.
I invite you to dust off your deerstalker cap, track down your magnifying glass, and have your pipe at the ready. Join us - the game is afoot!
Your local Holmes enthusiast -

Festival Finale November 15th
 | The world famous consulting detective visits Green Lake November 15th |
He may have retired years ago to a country estate to focus on beekeeping, but the world-famous consulting detective remains a man in demand. Earlier this year we were fortunate enough to reach his scheduler, Mr. John C. Sherwood, who helped us arrange a visit by Mr. Sherlock Holmes to Green Lake on Saturday morning, November 15.
Mr. Holmes joins Timothy Johnson of the University of Minnesota Libraries here that morning. Tim is the curator of the world's largest collection of Holmes materials (over 60,000 items). He will bring along some artifacts from the collection for us to enjoy.
Tim's presentation will begin at 10:00. After speaking about the collection he will introduce us to his friend Sherlock Holmes. The two gentlemen have also graciously agreed to answer questions for participants at the conclusion of the program.
