Congratulations Media Festival Winners!
Congratulations to this year's System Media Festival winners!  The media festival is a celebration of student learning and creativity showcased through multimedia production.  Students create original multimedia videos, sequential stills, podcasts, stop motion videos, and more.  This year, the system had over 75 entries from all grade levels.  Winning projects at the system level will now progress to state competition.  The state competition will be held on Friday, April 27.  State winning projects will be recognized at the May Board of Education meeting, and state winning projects will be added to the Monroe County Schools Youtube Channel.  A special thank you goes to teachers, parents, and media specialists who guided these projects.

MP Chorus is Superior at State Competition
From among more than 6,500 students who auditioned, five Mary Persons students - Jeffrey Dunbar, Sydney Everett, Jackson Harvey, Stephanie Nix, and Beau Watson - soloed and sight read their way into Georgia Allstate choirs comprised of Georgia's 1,300 most talented high school singers.  February 22 and 23 in Athens, university professors and directors of professional choirs rehearsed the students.  These talented youth culminated their educational experience with a concert at Athens' The Classic Center on Saturday evening, February 24, 2017.
March 3, 2017, seven Mary Persons singers represented Mary Persons High School at Region 2-AAAA literary competition in Dudley.  The event was formally judged by masters prepared musicians and choral directors.  From within a field of six participating schools, the ladies trio, Sunny DeVane (alto), Kennedy Finch (second soprano) and Stephanie Nix (soprano), finished fourth.  Soprano Stephanie Nix finished third in ladies' solo.  The Mary Persons' men's quartet, whose singers include Jeffery Dunbar (bass), Jackson Harvey (baritone), Clay Moore (first tenor), and Beau Watson (second tenor), took the region's top honors.  Jackson Harvey also won the region's men's solo competition.  The men's quartet and Mr. Harvey will represent Mary Persons at the state finals on March 18, 2017 in Buford, Georgia.
For the fifth year in a row, every Mary Persons Choir received superior singing and sight reading ratings from every judge at the 2017 Georgia Music Educators' Association Large Group Performance Evaluation event held in Warner Robins, Georgia on March 14, 2017.  A superior rating denotes "an outstanding performance worthy of distinction of being recognized as among the very best".
"These singers are among the cream of the crop," said Charles Hernandez, in his fifth year as Director of the Mary Persons choral program.  "I'm so honored to work with them."
Choral booster club president for 2016-2017, Shannon Gordon, said, "I hope our community recognizes the incredible assets Forsyth-Monroe has in these students, Mr. Hernandez and the wonderful new Fine Arts Center. "  She continued, "I hope everyone will consider joining us for the final choral concert of the year on Monday, May 15 at 7:00 PM at the Fine Arts Center.  It promises to be a wonderful evening."

Dr. Jim Finch, MP's principal, was chosen as this week's 13WMAZ "My Teacher is TOPS" award recipient.  He was nominated by Imani Web, one of the students in his AMDM math class he teaches each day at Mary Persons High School.  Click the picture above to see the story profiling Dr. Finch.  Congratulations, Dr. Finch!  We are proud of you and grateful for you and your leadership!

Tiny Grant Award Winner: MCS PreK to Benefit
Congratulations to Dr. Kelly Smith, one of Monroe County Schools' Speech/Language Pathologists.  Dr. Smith recently worked with Mrs. Elder, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, and applied for the 2017 Innovation Fund Tiny Grant Award sponsored by the Governor's Office of Student Achievement.  Governor Nathan Deal announced the 20 award winners for the state on Thursday, March 16 and we were proud to learn that Dr. Smith has been awarded a $1,720 grant to support the implementation of  the "Sounds Abound Program" for the Birth-to-Age-Eight Language and Literacy Development priority area.  The purpose of this project is to teach fun, engaging phonological awareness activities to help Monroe County pre-kindergarten students learn rhyming, beginning and ending sounds, and blending. These phonological awareness skills are part of the learning domain of Communication, Language and Literacy for the Georgia Early Learning and Development Standards (Standard CLL6).  The "Sounds Abound Program" includes hands-on activities and interactive software for learning phonological awareness skills.  During the 2017-2018 school year, Mrs. Elder and Dr. Smith will work with our district's Pre-K teachers to implement these activities as part of the literacy model to teach phonological awareness.

From Governor's Office of Student Achievement Press Release:
Gov. Nathan Deal announced 20 award winners for the Innovation Fund Tiny Grant program, a competitive grant opportunity that provides funding to traditional public schools, charter schools, and school districts to implement small-scale programs directly engaging students.
"The Innovation Fund Tiny Grant unites education leaders and students to provide Georgia's students with the ability to engage in today's most innovative academic areas," said Deal. "As we look to ensure that our children reach new heights in educational achievement, we must promote opportunities for more effective academic growth and success in the classroom. Congratulations to the award winners and we look forward to seeing the impact each Tiny Grant will have on the futures of Georgia students."
Programs funded by Tiny Grants must align with one of the three following priority areas: applied learning with a focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education, development and replication of blended learning school models and birth-to-age-eight language and literacy development.
Grantees will evaluate the impact of the programs on student engagement and achievement and submit their findings to the Governor's Office of Student Achievement at the end of the grant period.

A Message from Monroe County Schools Counselors: Great Family Activities in March
In a great article by Apryl Duncan, she discusses wonderful ideas for the entire family about celebrating the month of March. With spring fast approaching is a great time of the year to get children outside and involved in activities unrelated to school. Below are a few fun suggestions for the month of March:
-Celebrate Spring: Enjoy the nice weather, maybe plant flowers in the yard together.
-Youth Art Month: Encourage all forms of art. Some children may like creative outdoor painting or making a bowl out of clay.
-National Nutrition Month: This is a great time to teach children about nutrient rich foods. It maybe fun to compare the label on the back of a kids fast food meal to a meal packed with their favorite fruits and veggies.
-National Craft Month: Crafting is so much fun! Making a collage or candles for the house is not only a task the children to enjoy but it's one for the entire family.
-Women's History Month: Both boys and girls could benefit from learning about Women's History Month. It could be helpful to even discuss important women in your family.
-American Red Cross Month: Younger children could benefit from a review on home safety tips like what to do in case of a fire, stranger or family emergency (call 911). For older children, the Red Cross offers a babysitting course that could prepare them for summer or spring break babysitting jobs.
-National Noodle Month: Have fun with noodles by either making their favorite noodle dish or using noodles in a homemade craft.spring-word-flowers.jpg
Enjoy the month of March!
