Haynes Receives $998 Grant Award

Ms. Annie Haynes was awarded a grant of $998 for the Access Department from the Bright Ideas grant by Southern Rivers Energy Trust Operation. The goal of this grant proposal is to help students that have disabilities participate in community based instruction. The design of the community based instruction lessons are to help students learn how to become a part of the community so that they can work and live in their communities after graduation. This grant will allow the students to participate in 7 community based instruction trips. These trips include instruction in grocery stores, restaurants, local community stores, and the local farmers market. 
3 Calendar Options for 2016-2017

The Monroe County Board of Education is considering three calendar options for the 2016-2017 school year. 


This survey will be open for your responses through Friday, October 30.  The Board of Education members will consider all survey responses in their deliberations.  The Board of Education is expected to select and approve the 2016-2017 calendar at the November meeting on Tuesday, November 10.
GaDOE Parent Survey
The Georgia Department of Education Parent Survey  contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphones or tablet.  For parents that do not have access to the Internet, please visit our schools to complete the Georgia Parent Survey.  We encourage all parents to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis.  Individual data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online.  
ACCESS Department Fundraiser
The ACCESS Department is holding a fundraiser to help send students to prom and purchase supplies for learning. We are selling eco-friendly reusable bags and home goods. Get a head start on your Christmas shopping with gifts under $10. The fundraiser runs until October 31st! Senior Night and College Fair
Make plans to attend on Tuesday, November 10 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. College recruiters will be here as well as the GSFC representative to discuss updates with the HOPE/Zell Miller Scholarship and Grants.

Apply to College Day will be held at MPHS on Thursday, November 12 from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. College admissions counselors will be on site to help students who have not applied to college yet.  Students will need to sign up for a time slot during an elective period.

ASVAB
Students interested in the military must take the ASVAB exam given at MPHS on November 19. We will have sign-up forms in the counselor's office closer to the test date.  Please click here to register by November 6th.  Students must register using their school email accounts!  All branches of the military require this test.
College Application Fees Waived
The following colleges have agreed to waive their application fees.  
  • Georgia Gwinnett College will waive its $20 application fee, from Oct. 23 to Nov. 23. Apply directly at www.ggc.edu.
  • Savannah State College will waive its $20 application fee.  Apply via your gacollege411 account.
  • Albany State University will waive its $20 application fee for the month of November.

AP Exam Payments
Students may start making payments for their AP exams beginning November 6.  The cost of each exam is $93.  The fee schedule is:
                                  Nov. 6              Feb. 5
                                  Dec. 4              Mar. 4
                                  Jan. 8               

This will allow student to make 5 low payments (4 low payments of $20.00 + 5th payment of $13.00).  
Parents may also pay for AP exams online via their MySchoolBucks account.  All major credit cards are accepted and there will be an additional $3 charge.  Please see Ms. Burston if you have any questions.

Visual Arts students celebrate one of their own each month as MP's Student Artist of the Month.  The following students have been recognized so far this fall.

Zentangle Skull Line Designs
Art I students used formal qualities of art to create emphasis in a design based on the Calaveras (sugar skull) motif from the Day of the Dead Celebration.  



 
Abstract Movement Sculptures
Art II students created abstract sculptural forms from sculpture wire and nylon, added a wooden base, and applied an analogous color scheme to emphasize movement.


Balsa Foam Relief Tiles
Art II students used low relief carving techniques to create a scene, then added acrylic paint to emphasize form.

Students created a triptych, or series of three artworks displayed together, showing transformation of an item of food.

Best Buddies News
On Thursday, 10/22 Best Buddies hosted a Family Meet & Greet. Buddy Pairs were invited to bring their families and enjoy a pizza dinner. The purpose of the event was to foster friendships between the students by giving them an opportunity to get to know each other as well as their families. Over 65 people attended and were able to learn some information about the purpose of Best Buddies and the requirements of being in a match.

78 students attended the Fall Motivational Rally in Perry at the Georgia National Fair.
FFA News
Congratulations to our Landjudging teams for their success at the State Competition this past Saturday.  They Junior team placed 3rd in the state. Austin Wiggins was the 2nd highest scorer in the Junior level.  Other Junior team members were Tycorion Brown, Matthew Gordon, and Anna Hightower.  The Senior team placed 4th in the state. TulaBlue Waldrep was the 3rd high individual in the state, and the rest of our Senior team was C.W. Walker, Chase Grizzard, and Courtney Stovall.

TSA News
TSA had a total of 11 students attend Tech Day at the Georgia National Fair on October 12th, and most competed in events. A great job and great time was had by all! We also had many TSA parents join us for the competitions and fair fun. 

It's not too late to become a member of TSA! We had a great time at Tech Day at the Fair and are really looking forward to our Fall Leadership Conference. This will be at the Jekyll Island Convention Center November 13-15. Deadline to sign up to attend is October 23rd, so contact Mrs. C. Barfield in the Tech Lab, room 220 or another TSA member ASAP to join! Applications are available outside the tech lab or on our website

Football News
Mary Persons beat Veterans 24-10. Zach Harvey rushed for 205 yards including a 85 yard TD run.  Quen Wilson added a 67 yard TD run. Roger Akins and Will Bazemore led the receiving corp.  Dan O'Neal led the Bulldog defense with 8 tackles including 2 sacks and 2 tackles for loss.  The Bulldogs host Baldwin this Friday.  Game time is 7:30.

Softball News
MP Fastpitch season ends falling two games to Heritage High School in the second round of state. The Bulldogs lost 1-3 in the first game. Megan Bell pitched the entire game and offense was a team effort. During the second game both teams went back and forth the whole game. Going into extra innings the Bulldogs fell short 6-8. Megan Bell pitched a great game. Allyssah Mullis, Sydney Thompson, and Katelyn Smith were the key hitters during the game.
