Respect Rally

On Friday, March 20th during 7th period the student leaders of Best Buddies hosted a Respect Rally as the culminating activity for their week long Spread the Word to End the Word campaign. The campaign included information throughout the week and a pledge drive during lunches on Friday. Students signed a banner to pledge respect to all of their peers - particularly those with disabilities. The Respect Rally included a slideshow of students from the student body who support Best Buddies and the End the R Word movement, a Lip Sync Battle featuring Ms. Metcalf, Mr. and Mrs. McElhaney, and Coach Simmons, a football throw competition in which buddy pairs participated in teams, and a video that described why the R word is disrespectful, how we're all more alike than different, and various ways to demonstrate respect.

Best Buddies works continually to enhance the already existing culture of respect at Mary Persons. We appreciate the engagement and respect that was demonstrated throughout the rally!

If you would like to order a grey and red t-shirt that was worn on Friday at the Respect Rally, click here for an order form. Feel free to share this order form with anyone who may be interested.

All orders and payments should be submitted by Friday, April 3.

Shirts will be delivered after Spring Break.

MP Teacher Spotlight
This week's spotlight is on Mr. Matt Gordon.  Mr. Gordon graduated from the Georgia College and State University with a bachelors in Biology. He also earned his masters degree from GCSU. He has been teaching for 15 years. He said he was encouraged to become a teacher by some of his aunts and uncles who are teachers. When asked what he likes best about his job, he said "Everyday is different, but the best thing is knowing that maybe I helped make someone's life better." Asked what his favorite memories from his high school years were, he said "playing for a state championship in football and Ms. Derryberry's classes were also great."

His hobbies include going on day trips with my family, golfing, hunting, and fishing.  He said that Washington D.C. and Italy were some of the most interesting places that he has traveled. His favorite book is Candide by Voltaire, "although I haven't read it in a good while." His role model is his dad.  His favorite sport is football.  He loves UGA & the Falcons.  When asked if there was anything else he would like to share, he said "I currently work with 5 people who taught me. I think that is cool."  His bucket list" includes "retiring and traveling, skydiving, and visiting every Major League Baseball stadium."

First-place Bulldogs host Upson-Lee on Friday

The Varsity Boys soccer team is on a roll. Last week's 5-1 win at Howard along with a 10-0 trouncing of Baldwin two nights earlier, means the Bulldogs (9-3, 5-1 in Region 2-AAAA) now sit alone in first place in the region. MP entered this week having won five straight games and are scoring an average of six goals per game during that stretch. Sophomore Jack Edenfield led the way for the Bulldogs with two goals and an assist against the Huskies. Josh Hampton, Dawson Daniel and James Davis all had a goal apiece on the night. Hampton and Will Walters also recorded assists in the win. The Bulldogs fell behind early, but responded with five straight goals while dominating possession to earn the easy win. Junior goalkeeper Harper James had seven saves on the night and defenders Jacob Berkebile, William Stevick and Addison Chapman helped shut down the Howard offense. Sophomore Shane King helped control the midfield for MP, which outshot its opponent 28-12 on the night. Next up, MP hosts a very talented Upson-Lee squad on Friday night.
