The Monroe County Board of Education will meet for its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 10.  The meeting begins with a call to order at 6:30 p.m. followed by executive session.  The board returns to regular session and recognitions at 7 p.m.  For the agenda, see our eBoard website.
Construction Begins for Fine Arts Center
Site work is underway in preparation for the new Monroe County Schools Fine Arts Center being constructed on the Board of Education campus at 25 Brooklyn Avenue. The Fine Arts Center is slated for completion in the fall of 2016.

Between now and then, the BOE campus will be undergoing tremendous change. Parking area and traffic flow through the campus will be altered. Temporary parking will be created adjacent to the Mary Persons Freshman Campus and behind Dan Pitts Stadium.

As school visitors and community members travel on and around the BOE campus, caution is urged.   All persons driving on the campus will need to be mindful of and comply with traffic control signs and indicators. All should be constantly aware of the high levels of bus and car traffic, the continued presence of students and staff pedestrians, and the many construction workers who will be on site.

For specific questions, contact the BOE office at 478-994-2031.

A Message from Monroe County Schools Counselors:  Bullying Prevention -- Communication is Key
This past week Monroe County Middle School celebrated Anti-Bullying Week.  Parents and guardians are among the school's best allies in bullying prevention:
  • Talk with and Listen to Your Children Everyday. Ask questions about their school day, including experiences on the way to and from school, lunch, and/or recess. Ask about their peers. Small changes could be red flags.
  • Spend time at School.  Volunteer. Volunteer. Volunteer. Contact your child's school counselor or parent coordinator to serve as a volunteer in your child school.
  • Be a Good Example. Children are always watching. When you get angry with waiters, other drivers or others, model effective communication techniques. Modeling is a great way to be an example.
  • Create Healthy Anti-Bullying Habits. Starting as young as possible, coach your children on both what not to do (push, tease, and be mean to others) as well as what to do (be kind, empathize, and take turns). Also coach your child on what to do if someone is mean to him or to another (get an adult, tell the bully to stop, walk away and ignore the bully).
  • Make Sure Your Child Understands Bullying. Explicitly explain what it is and that it's not normal or tolerable for them to bully, be bullied, or stand by and watch other kids be bullied.
