MP Named 2015 AP STEM Achievement School

Mary Persons High School was recognized last week for its achievement in AP STEM courses.  The school was named an AP STEM School and AP STEM Achievement School.  MP is among a short list of high schools in Georgia recognized for this achievement in AP courses.  AP courses and exams are administered by the College Board, which also administers the SAT. AP courses are one of several ways Georgia students can access college-level learning opportunities. Students who receive a 3, 4, or 5 on AP exams may receive college credit.

AP STEM Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses (AP Calculus AB, AB Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science).

AP STEM Achievement Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses and at least 40 percent of the exam scores on AP math and AP science exams earning scores of 3 or higher

A Message from Monroe County Schools Nurses:  Ice or Heat -- Which to Apply?
What happens to the tissues after an injury?

When you twist an ankle or knee, or you fall and get a bruise, or pull a back muscle, the soft tissues in the area are injured. Immediately after the injury, the tiny blood vessels that normally supply blood and oxygen to these areas are broken. The broken blood vessels then leak blood and fluid into the injured tissues causing swelling and sometimes bruising.

So, what is best applied after the injury?  In a word, ICE.
Cold applications with ice can help by causing the blood vessels to clamp down. This "clamping down" of the blood vessels prevents further leakage of blood and fluid into the tissue and minimizes the amount of swelling and pain. The cold from an ice pack application also has an added benefit of providing pain relief.
What about recovery after the injury? In the days after an injury, (2-3 days), when the tissues are healing, heat is the better treatment. The blood leakage from the injured blood vessels has generally stopped and the blood that remains in the tissues needs to be reabsorbed by the body. Applying heat will aid the body's natural healing process.
Heat creates higher tissue temperatures, which produces dilation of the blood vessels. This increases the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the healing area. The heat provides an additional benefit by relaxing the muscles of the injured area so that exercise and activity can occur as safely as possible.

Frequently, immediately after a workout, during the recovery period, ice is applied so that leakage of fluid or blood from the healing blood vessels during the workout is minimized.

How Long:  Ice or heat should be applied to the injured area for 15-20 minutes several times daily.  www.webmd.com/pain-management/try-heat-or-ice
