MP Teacher Spotlight
This week's spotlight is on Mr. D.J. Hurm. Mr. Hurm attended St. Petersburg College and Valdosta State University.  He has been teaching for 6 years. When asked what/who inspired him to become a teacher, he said "Klaus Bernhardt, a consultant that we had hired at a former company inspired me.  He was very well paid, already fabulously wealthy but worked because he wanted to 'do something meaningful, something that mattered.'  It took 2 years for that to sink in and ultimately led to my career change." Prior to teaching, he worked 30+ years in building construction management, marketing, etc.  What he likes best about his job is "learning every day from my students, and that all of my co-workers are focused on the same goal." One of his memories from high school is "when Ms. Bobb told us that if we didn't master the use of participles we would have to work in construction all of our lives.  Please tell her it wasn't a bad career!"
In his spare time, Mr. Hurm enjoys building, guitar, and spoiling 5 grandchildren. Interesting places he has traveled to are the Riesling Vineyards of Germany and all 4 corners of the Continental U.S.  He would still like to see Australia, the Holy Land, and all of Monroe County.  His favorite books are The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and The New Testament, "depends on my mood".  His favorite sport is football, and his favorite teams are the MP Bulldogs and the Florida Gators. His role model is Paul of Tarsus.  His "bucket list" includes "jumping a train, restoring a 1965 Mustang, a Golden Wedding Anniversary and finishing my bachelor's. In that order."  When asked if there was anything else he would like to share, he said "never store your ChapStick and your glue stick in the same desk drawer."

FFA News

The Mary Persons FFA Chapter recently participated in the Georgia Green Industry Association Conference at the Gwinnett Center in Lawrenceville Georgia. Students had the opportunity to visit the trade show and explore future career possibilities as well as hear from guest speakers discussing the horticulture industry in Georgia.

Also, students had the opportunity to attempt to become certified as Jr. Plant Professionals through the Georgia Green Industry Association. This certification is a very challenging test. Students have to learn 140 plants and take a 50 question test over plant science and the horticulture industry. Each FFA Chapter can send up to ten students to attempt certification. In all 74 students from around the state of Georgia attempted to get certified. To let you know how challenging the certification test is; Only eleven students passed both portions of the certification tests. We are proud of our Mary Persons FFA members as eight of the eleven were from our school.

Mary Persons FFA members earning certification were: Elizabeth Smith (also High individual score), Emsley Smith (3rd overall), Amber Pritchett (4th overall), Daniel Garrett (7th overall), Cassie Rogers (eight overall), Jessica White (9th overall), Dustin Ramsey (11th overall) and Katie Bottomley (12th overall). Each one of these students are now certified through the Georgia Green Industry Association as Jr. Plant Professionals. Also, Rebekah Simpson and Haley Holland attempted certification and passed the written portion of the exam.
