A Message from Monroe County Schools Counselors: Teaching Empathy and Compassion
heart-drawing-girl.jpg February is only a few days away and traditionally it has been known as the month of love. It is also a great opportunity to teach children about the being compassionate towards others. Below are several ways to teach compassion to younger aged children.

1)      Modeling- Many life lessons occur outside of school, therefore the basis of a compassionate child starts at home. Model being compassionate and showing kindness to your friends, neighbors, or other parents in your social circle.

2)      Empathy- Teach empathy by encouraging your child to discuss their feeling. Have them reflect on how their actions can affect the feeling of others.

3)      Responsibility- To teach responsibility, give your child an age appropriate task (i.e. setting the table, assisting with washing dishes, or cleaning bedroom). Children like to feel needed as though they have contributed to the household.

All in all, use the month of showing love to teach that red hearts and chocolates are temporary, but being compassionate can have a lasting effect on others.
