Students Sending Spanish Children's Books to El Salvador

Ms Slaughter's Spanish 2 students recently made children's books using vocabulary and grammar about getting ready to go out for an event. Many used animals for their main characters and illustrated the books with drawings, clip art, or even real pictures of their own pets. The characters were getting ready for a variety of activities including going to school, a birthday party, a soccer game, or a camping trip. Naomi Sanders thought the fun, creative stories would be great to send on a mission trip to El Salvador with a group from her church. Naomi is pictured with several of the donated books.

MP Teacher Spotlight
This week's spotlight is on Mrs. Amanda Hightower. Mrs. Hightower received her B.A. from Mercer University, and her M.Ed. in Ed Leadership from Georgia College and State University. She has been teaching for 23 years, and was inspired to become a teacher by her high school Algebra teacher, Ms. Mason. When asked what she likes most about her job she said "working with young people". Her favorite memory from her high school years are "basketball games and a packed-out gym." Besides teaching high school, she has also been an executive assistant at a brokerage firm, and has been a technology trainer for educators.

Her hobbies include being a mom, and gardening.  Her favorite book is Game of Thrones.  Her favorite sports are high school football, basketball, and volleyball. Three items that she has on her "bucket list" are "to visit Ireland, Scotland, Italy, and Greece; to see the Western United States; and to spend Christmas vacation somewhere where it snows."

Choosing the Best Speaker

Valerie Hicks, Youth Development Coordinator of the North Central Health District, spoke with 10th grade students last week about making wise choices concerning sexual behavior.  Ms. Hicks said that "people are not born winners or losers. People are born choosers." She tells the students that it is on them, and the choices they make in life will effect the rest of their lives. She also tells them "the poorer the choice, the less control you have over the consequence."

Tech Tip

Prezi is a presentation tool that helps transform lack-luster, static presentations into engaging presentations that tell a story. Instead of moving slide to slide, like a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation, Prezi presentations capture content in a spatial context. Because of this, your audience may be more engaged with your presentation which can be a powerful tool for high school students.
