The family of the Monroe County School System has joined this week with all of our community in sadness and grief over the tragic death of Deputy Michael Norris - our alumnus, our friend, our co-worker, and our protector. In respect for him, his fellow officers, and his family, Monroe County Schools will close early on Friday, Sept. 19.
Students will be served lunch before they are released. Please check your school's website for details. Each school will also be releasing a call out message with details of the day's release.
Board members and school administrators have been in contact with local officials concerning the timing and events of this Friday's funeral services. The board and administrators feel it is not only logistically prudent to release staff and students early, but it is an appropriate act of respect.
Events surrounding the funeral services for Deputy Norris will take place in the Downtown Forsyth area beginning at 1 p.m. Hundreds of visiting law enforcement officers are expected to be in town to take part in the service for Deputy Norris. Monroe County Schools' wishes are to allow students and staff the opportunity to pay their own respects to Deputy Norris and his family.
Deputy Norris not only served his community, but as a 2008 Mary Persons High School graduate, he is a member of the Monroe County Schools family in addition to having served the system as a School Resource Officer. No one has been untouched by his service and dedication.
All of the Monroe County Schools family joins in expressing condolences to Deputy Norris' family, to his work family at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and to his friends throughout the community. May his legacy honor all of those individuals whose time and talents are given to the service and protection of our schools and our community.
Additionally, we offer thanks and prayers to Deputy Jeff Wilson as he recovers from his injuries. May he be restored to health fully and quickly.
