Monroe County Achievement Center:  Fit to Achieve

The faculty, staff, and students of the Monroe County Achievement Center are already geared up and going on our service learning project: "Fit to Achieve." The schoolwide project focuses on how to get healthy and maintain wellness. This project is an extension of last year's garden service learning project. Students will continue to manage the vegetable and fruit garden as a part of maintaining healthy eating.

Several components make up this year's project.  Students will create e-brochures in Business Essentials. The best e-brochure will be selected to promote the "Fit to Achieve" 5K/Fun Run.  Students will also get regular activity through walking, line dancing, and sporting activities.  Students will track how many steps they take using a pedometer during the walks.  There will also be line dancing videos posted on the Monroe County Achievement Center webpage so that the public can get active, fit, and healthy along with the students. Even the faculty is getting in on the action by participating in a weight loss competition with the goal to lose ten or more pounds.  A weighin every Tuesday holds the faculty accountable and MCAC will have opportunities for faculty to participate in exercise after school with the Shaun T Focus T25 workout. The culmination of our project will be our fundraiser event: "Fit to Achieve" 5K/Fun Run. It will be on March 28, 2015 at 9 am and it's $25 for the 5K and $15 for the 1 Mile Fun Run, registration includes t-shirt. MCAC's goal is to get the message of health and wellness out there and to lead by example. Come join us on the journey to healthy living! HES Fifth Grade Academy Session Celebrates Leadership

Hubbard Elementary's fifth grade teacher team of Susan Adams-Curtis, Alexandria Markert, Lisa Crosby, and Daryl Baker recently hosted the second annual fifth grade leadership academy session on an August Saturday morning. Students and their families participated in team building activities and a service project in addition to goal setting activities and reviews of the year's class events. Over 50 people attended the Saturday session, and the fifth grade class has set goals to create an outdoor garden, recycle newspapers, and raise funds for local animal shelters. The HES fifth grade's next leadership academy is scheduled for November.
