The Board of Education recognized Mr. Grady Caldwell, pictured at right.  He will lead the Monroe County Achievement Center in the 2014-2015 school year. Mr. Caldwell previously served as assistant principal at Mary Persons High School.

The Monroe County Board of Education will meet for its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 8 at 6:30 p.m.  A budget hearing will be held at 7 p.m.  For the complete list of 2014-2015 budget calendar events, click here.
MCS Recognized for Math Resource Technology Adoption
The Center for Digital Education, a national organization that honors excellence in educational technology in K12 and higher education, recently recognized Monroe County Schools for its 2013-2014 math resource adoption that included etextbooks and ipads in addition to concentrated instructional technology coaching.  Through the instructional leadership provided at Mary Persons High School along with teacher training and collaboration, the high school math adoption serves as an example to other high schools across the nation.  In 2014-2015, the math department will have additional ipads at Mary Persons High School as even more math courses infuse technology into the teaching and learning process.

Monroe County Schools Chief Technology Officer Valerie Mercer stated, "With the support of the Board of Education and superintendent, educational technology is clearly supported in our system.  Mary Persons High School instructional leadership is strong, and the school has actively sought to infuse technology into the teaching and learning process.  Because of that, Mary Persons High School teachers are not afraid of innovation and seeking ways to engage their students through technology.  The math department, under the direction of Mrs. Amanda Hightower, was willing to seek out technology strategies to engage students, and that is a clear example of what teacher and student collaboration using technology tools are changing in what was formerly known as the textbook adoption process. With great instructional technology coaching from Mr. Ronnie Shipman, teachers were able to build lessons and implement strategies to use the technology as they taught the math concepts to their students."  Monroe County Schools will also introduce 900 Google HP Chromebooks in classrooms across the system as part of the English/Language Arts Resource Adoption for 2014-2015.
Monroe County Schools Students Score Well on CRCT
Monroe County Schools' students performed well in the annual CRCT test given to students at grades three through eight.

Monroe County Schools' students outperformed students in surrounding counties.  Those systems marked in yellow below are Middle Georgia RESA systems.
Students took the CRCT for the last time this year. Beginning next year, all students in grades 3-8 will take the Georgia Milestones. The new testing system is one consistent program across grades 3-12, rather than a series of  individual tests. It will include open-ended questions to better gauge student content mastery and, with some exceptions for special education students with specific testing accommodations, will be administered entirely online by the fifth year of implementation.

Georgia Milestones will be aligned to the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) in English language arts and mathematics and Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) in science and social studies. This testing system will require more from students than the CRCT and EOCT it replaces, in order to better prepare students for college and career and to provide a more realistic picture of academic progress.  These increased expectations for learning may mean initially lower scores than previous years CRCT or EOCT scores, but that is to be expected and should bring Georgia's tests in line with other indicators of how our students are performing.

New Immunization Requirements for Seventh Graders

Georgia's immunization requirements for children attending seventh grade have been revised to align with the current Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

Effective July 1, 2014, all children born on or after January 1, 2002 who are attending seventh grade, and children who are new entrants into a Georgia school in grades eight through twelve, must have received one dose of Tdap vaccine and one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine.   Families are encouraged to visit the Monroe County Health Department or your pediatrician to address this before the school year begins.
