shot_preparation.jpg

Georgia's immunization requirements for children attending seventh grade have been revised to align with the current Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

Effective July 1, 2014, all children born on or after January 1, 2002 who are attending seventh grade, and children who are new entrants into a Georgia school in grades eight through twelve, must have received one dose of Tdap vaccine and one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine.   Families are encouraged to visit the Monroe County Health Department or your pediatrician to address this before the school year begins.

A Message from Monroe County Schools Nurses:  Summer Heat Illnesses

Heat exhaustion starts slowly, but if it's not quickly treated it can progress to heatstroke. In heat strokes, a person's temperature reaches 105F (40.5C) or higher. Heatstroke requires immediate emergency medical care and can be fatal.

Signs and Symptoms of heat exhaustion:  increased thirst, weakness, fainting, muscle cramps, nausea and vomiting, irritability, headache, increased sweating, clammy skin, increased body temperature that is high, but not higher than 105 degrees.

Signs and Symptoms of heatstroke:  severe headache, weakness, dizziness, confusion,

rapid breathing and heartbeat, loss of consciousness leading to coma, seizures, lack of sweating, flushed hot dry skin, elevated body temperature of 105 degrees or higher.

What to Do

If your child or an adult has symptoms of heatstroke, seek emergency medical care immediately. In cases of heat exhaustion or while awaiting help for the victim of possible heatstroke...Bring the victim indoors or into the shade immediately.  Undress the victim.  Have the individual lie down; elevate feet slightly.  If the person is alert, place in cool bath water. If outside, spray them with mist from a garden hose.  If the victim is alert and coherent, give frequent sips of cool, clear fluids.  If the person is vomiting, turn them onto his/her side to prevent choking.

Think Prevention!

Teach kids to always drink plenty of fluids before and during any activity in hot, sunny weather - even if they aren't thirsty.  Make sure kids wear light-colored, loose clothing in warm weather.  Don't let kids participate in heavy activity outdoors during the hottest hours of the day.  Teach kids to come indoors immediately whenever they feel overheated.
