Students Qualify for National Bridge Design Contest

Daniel Collins and Tucker Poupard
The Qualifying Round ( Jan. 14th - May 2nd ) of the Engineering Encounters National Bridge Design Contest ended this past Friday. The name of the contest has changed, but the bridge design software is still called West Point Bridge Designer. We had 2 teams qualify to compete in the Semi-Final Round on May 30th. Forty-four teams from across the country will be competing from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on that date. Our students were the ONLY high school students from Georgia to qualify for this competition. There were approx. 4,046 high school teams competing as of the evening of May the 1st. Daniel Collins and Tucker Poupard, both 11th graders, will be competing separately. Each student will be working alone, competing against each other and the rest of those chosen, but both representing Mary Persons. About Engineering Encounters: They are engaged in collaborations and partnerships with the American Society of Civil Engineering, the United States Military Academy Center for STEM Education, the United States Naval Academy Center for STEM Education, and the Army Educational Outreach Program. Boys Soccer Team Falls in Double Overtime The Mary Persons boys soccer team suffered a heartbreaking double-overtime defeat to Jonesboro in the Class AAAA state playoffs on Saturday night at Billy Lancaster Field. The Bulldogs (10-6-2) lost 2-1 after the senior-laden Cardinals (10-4) scored with just over 2 minutes remaining in the second overtime period of the game. MP had battled back after falling behind 1-0 in the first half to tie things up by halftime. The two teams traded blows in the second half. A shot by junior Josh Hampton looked to be destined for the goal after he sliced through the defense, but the Cardinals came up with a key block that prevented MP from taking the lead. The Bulldog defense held firm the rest of regulation and into overtime until Jonesboro was able to cut the ball back across goal and get enough of a touch on the ball to guide it into the goal. The loss was the final game for senior All-Region midfielder Dennis Miller, who was also a team captain this season. Fellow senior goalkeeper Sam Watson also finished his career with MP. He had 13 saves on the night.
