Are Your Child's Immunizations
Up to Date?

There are new immunization requirements that will go into effect July 1, 2014.  All students entering the 7th grade for the 2014-2015 school year will be required to meet the following requirements:

One dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) - This shot is recommended for preteens and teens and
protects against three dangerous diseases, including whooping cough.

AND

One dose of Meningococcal conjugate vaccine - This shot protects against infections that can cause brain damage, arm and leg amputations, kidney damage, and death.
Preteens need one shot before entering 7th grade and a booster at age 16.

This rule also applies to new students who are entering grades 8 through 12 in Georgia schools.  All other immunization requirements remain unchanged.

AP Test Performance
More Georgia seniors are scoring a 3 or higher - a passing score - on Advanced Placement (AP) exams compared to last year, according to The College Board's AP Report to the Nation released today. The report shows that 18,535 students scored a 3 or higher this year, compared to 17,767 last year. A higher percentage (21.3%) of Georgia's seniors are scoring a 3 or higher compared to the U.S. average (20.1%) - one of 17 states to have a higher percentage than the national average. This report measures progress of the Class of 2013.  When results are broken out by subgroup, Georgia's African-American students rank 3rd in the nation in the percentage of seniors scoring a 3 or higher on AP exams. Georgia's 10-year increase (9.1%) in the percentage of seniors scoring a 3 or higher on AP exams also shows impressive results, ranking 13th in the nation.

During the past decade, the number of Georgia graduates taking at least one AP Exam has more than doubled, and the number of low-income students taking AP has increased more than tenfold. This expansion has resulted in a significant increase in the number of qualifying AP Exam scores typically required for college credit.  To see Mary Person's five year AP performance, click here.

A Message from the Superintendent
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING MOST RECENT INCLEMENT WEATHER

On Thursday, February 20, 2014, the State Board of Education approved a resolution waiving student days missed by districts under a State of Emergency for weather issues.  The student days missed (January 28, 29, & 30; February 12 & 13) by Monroe County Schools fit the requirements of the waiver.

The Georgia Department of Education's Assessment and Accountability Office approved the MCS request to move the testing windows for the various state tests back five (5) instructional days.  The delay of state testing by 5 days accounts for the 5 instructional days students missed due to inclement weather.

As a result of the SBOE Resolution and the extension of the state testing window by 5 days, Monroe County Schools's students will not make up the days indicated above.

Faculty and staff will make-up the time working on Curriculum Revisions, Curriculum Frameworks, Horizontal and Vertical Alignment of Curriculum, Benchmark and Predictor Tests, Rubrics to Evaluate Student Performance Tasks, Student Learning Objectives (SLO), and more.

Unless we experience more severe weather that further compromises instructional time for boys and girls, Spring Break will remain as scheduled and  the last day of school and graduation will remain on May 23, 2014.

On behalf of the Monroe County Board of Education and Administration of Monroe County Schools, thank you for your patience as we worked to make a decision that was best for our students.

Respectfully submitted,

Mr. Anthony D. Pack, Ed. S.

Superintendent of Schools

A Message from Monroe County Schools Counselors:  Test Preparation Tips
Alison Mitchell, MCMS Counselor

Preparation for your first test should begin on the first day of class; this includes paying attention during class, taking good notes, studying, completing homework assignments and reviewing study materials on a regular basis.Go to review and tutoring sessions, pay attention to hints that the teacher may give about the test. Take notes and ask questions about items you may not understand. Use note-cards, highlighters, and apps like quizlet to review important information. Review material from class notes, practice tests, homework problems, sample problems, review material, the textbook.  Eat a nutritious meal before a test. This will help you focus but avoid heavy foods which can make you sleepy.

Don't try to cram the night before a test. It is recommended to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night so that you'll be well rested enough to focus during the test. Put the main ideas, information, formulas onto a sheet that can be quickly reviewed many times, this makes it easier to retain the key concepts that will be on the test.

By Holly Amerson, MCAC Student

We had the pleasure of having Ms. Annette Coward, former 13WMAZ news anchor and current voice over artist, speak to the students of MCAC. Ms. Coward gave us advice to make every day worth it and not let anyone tell us that we can't do something. She let us know that there are steps to get to where we are going, don't burn bridges, and it isn't going to be easy, but it is always worth it. We all want to say thank you Ms. Coward for taking the time to share valuable advice with us.
