KBS Hosts Math Lunch and Learn
K. B. Sutton Elementary School provided a Lunch and Learn workshop for parents entitled "How to Support Your Child's Math Instruction." The presenters were Megan Smallwood and Sheri Williams. Mrs. Smallwood and Mrs. Williams are KBS teachers; they work with multiple grade levels. Kindergarten through fifth grade teachers provided specific grade level Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) parents should focus on at home. Multiple internet sites to assist students in math fact fluency and application of math concepts were shared. Several practical tips for parents to assist students in their everyday life were presented as well. Lastly, parents were encouraged to participate in "Make and Take" activities. Many parents made place value sliders to take home. Others played math fact games with dice and cards. Parents and staff enjoyed lunch provided by the K. B. Sutton Elementary School cafeteria staff which included a turkey hoagie, chips, cookies or muffins, and tea or lemonade.

A Message from the Superintendent: Important Notice Regarding Calendar Adjustments for Students and Staff
The Board voted on Saturday at their Board Training/Meeting to adjust this year's calendar due to missing January 7, 2014, because of the extreme cold.
1. March 14, 2014 will be a student day instead of a teacher work day.
2. May 29, 2014 will be the final teacher work day for the year. Ten month employees (teachers and those classified staff working the same calendar as teachers, 185 days) may use a personal day for the May 29, 2014 teacher work day without having to submit to the Superintendent for approval. If you have remaining personal days, you will submit through AESOP your request for use of a personal day and your Principal will sign off on the request. Again, this is only for the May 29, 2014 make-up teacher work day.
3. Those employees who have additional days added to your contract who are not eleven or twelve month employees will add a day at the end of the year to make up the teacher work day.
4. Eleven and twelve month employees - Mr. Jackson Daniel will release an adjusted calendar for the make-up day since May 29th is already a work day.

A Message from Monroe County Schools Nurses:
For many Monroe County Schools' students, their pets are very important parts of their lives. This week, Monroe County Schools Nurses focus on keeping our students' furry friends healthy and safe.
Even though your pets have a built in fur coat, you need to protect them during extremely cold, harsh winter weather.
- When temperature falls below 32 degrees consider keeping your animals inside the house or provide an insulated approved pet house. Add blankets, straw or wood shavings for added warmth.
- For very cold days and nights, put a coat or sweater on your pet (especially those with short hair or if they appear to be shivering). Although a dog/cats coat will thicken in the colder months, it takes several months to grow a thicker coat.
- Antifreeze tastes sweet and a dog/cat will lap up any spills. Be sure to clean spills up immediately since as little as a teaspoon of antifreeze can kill your pet. If your pet ingests any antifreeze take them to your veterinarian immediately.
- Animals can get frostbite. Their skin will turn bright red then pale and then black and begin to fall off. The most vulnerable parts are the ears, footpads and tails. If you notice skin discoloration, wrap the pet in a blanket and go to the vet.
- Wipe paws when coming inside to remove road salt (if snowing), antifreeze and any other chemicals. Check for cuts and scrapes.
- Replace frozen water in water bowls daily or more often if extremely cold. A heated water dish can be purchased if freezing is occurring daily.
