MCBOE Seeks Your Input for Possible 2014-2015 Calendar Revision
This past week the Mary Persons High Bulldog Football Team's "Open" game night for the 2014-2015 season was established by the Georgia High School Association. For the past two years, MCS has been able to coordinate Fall Break with the MPHS Football Team "Open" night. Currently, the 2014-2015 Fall Break is scheduled for October 10-13, 2014 (Friday through Monday with Staff and Students returning on Tuesday, October 14, 2014). Next year's "Open" night has been set for October 3, 2014.

This survey is to seek your input as to whether you would prefer the Board of Education move the 2014 Fall Break to October 3-6, 2014. This would be one week earlier than currently scheduled. Staff and Students would return on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. If the break is moved, there will be 7 weeks before the Thanksgiving Holidays. As the calendar is currently set, there are 6 weeks from returning from Fall Break to the beginning of Thanksgiving Holidays.

Thank you for taking time to complete this extremely short surveyhttps://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SKQPQGY

Please complete the survey by 9 PM on Thursday, 01/23/2014.
To accommodate families and their schedules, Monroe County Schools announces a new registration process for PreK enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year.  For details, click here.

A Message from Monroe County Schools Nurses: Tips for Healthy Winter Skin

Cold, dry winter air can leave your skin dry, itchy and irritated. Combat dry winter skin with these tips for retaining your skin's natural moisture.

  1. Invest in a humidifier. Using a humidifier in your home will add moisture to the dry air and keep your skin hydrated. Run it in the rooms you spend the most time in, especially your bedroom.
  2. Lower the thermostat. Central heat can make the air in your house even drier. Try setting the thermostat at a cooler but comfortable setting around 68-72 degrees.
  3. Skip hot showers. Although it is tempting to take a long, steamy shower, hot water dries out your skin by stripping off its natural oils. Instead take a 5-10 minute lukewarm shower or bath. When washing your hands, excessively hot water will turn your skin red and cause drying and cracking.
  4. Choose cleansers wisely. Avoid regular bar soaps since they can make dry, itchy skin worse. Choose fragrance-free, moisturizing cleansers and gels. Using less soap will also help.
  5. Change your face cleansing practices for the season. During the winter months, choose cream-based cleansers and avoid toners and astringents. Many astringents contain alcohol which can further dry your skin-look for ones that do not contain alcohol. Apply a rich moisturizer at night.
  6. Moisturize frequently. Apply moisturizer to the skin after bathing or showering. It is most effective if applied right after bathing and blotting dry to seal the water into the skin. Creams are better in the winter than lotions. Always apply hand cream after washing hands and use waterproof gloves when washing dishes or cleaning house. Do not forget to use chap stick on dry cracked lips.
  7. Apply sunscreen---even in the winter. It is still important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays on cold, dreary days of winter. Buy a moisturizer with an SPF of 15 or higher.
  8. Wear appropriate clothes. Wear soft breathable fabrics next to your skin. Protect your hands with gloves or mittens. Keep wool away from direct contact with skin as it is rough and itchy.
  9. Eat right and stay hydrated. Food and supplements containing omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids, such as salmon, fish oil and flaxseed oil, can help dry skin. Drink plenty of fluids especially water and avoid excessive amounts of caffeine.
  10. Change out of wet clothes quickly. Wearing wet clothes or shoes can irritate your skin and cause itchiness.
