Reporting Student Behavior Concerns
If you have student behavior concerns in the school, on school grounds, or on a bus, please contact the assistant principal or principal of the school your child attends to report the issue.  When an incident occurs on a bus, the driver will issue a discipline referral to the appropriate school administrator for the student(s) involved.  The school administrator will determine the discipline action.  The transportation department does not issue consequences for inappropriate behaviors.

Inappropriate behaviors occurring while students are under the jurisdiction of the school system will be addressed according to the progressive discipline plan established in the student codes of conduct for elementary, middle, and/or high school as applicable to each student involved in the behavior.  When considering the consequence to be imposed, the administrator will review the severity, intensity, and history of the student involving same or similar types of behaviors.

Individual student behavior issues are not a matter of public record and must be handled according to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

A Message from Monroe County Schools Nurses:  Car Seats Keep Children Safe, So Buckle Up!

New guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics on child passenger safety were released in 2011 and recommend:

  • Rear-facing car seats at least until a child reaches age 2
  • Forward-facing car seats with a five-point harness for as long as possible until a child is the maximum height and weight suggested by the manufacturer
  • Booster seats until an adult seat belt fits properly -- typically when a child reaches roughly 57 inches in height (4 foot, 9 inches)
  • Riding in the back seat until a child reaches age 13 null

The previous AAP policy, issued in 2002, advised that infants and toddlers remain in rear-facing safety seats until they reached the limits of the car seat, but cited 12 months and 20 pounds as a minimum. Researchers say that as a result, many parents turned the car seat around on the child's first birthday.

But new research has shown that children under age 2 are safer in rear-facing car seats. A 2007 study showed children under age 2 are 75% less likely to die or be severely injured in a crash if they are in a rear-facing car seat.  In addition, they recommend that when children 2 or older reach the maximum weight or height for a forward-facing seat with a harness they transition to sitting in belt-positioning booster seats until they have reached 4 feet 9 inches tall and are between 8 and 12 years old Source: New Guidelines for Children's Car Seats, Jennifer Warner http://www.webmd.com .
