Mary Persons Joins NFHS Network for Streaming of Athletic, Co-Curricular, and Extracurricular Activities Mary Persons High School joined over 19,000 high schools across America and over 50 Georgia high schools this week. All of these schools use National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) and PlayON! Sports in a partnership with Georgia High School Association (GHSA) to broadcast sporting events, extracurricular activities and even events like graduations and honors programs. You can watch a replay of the Mary Persons High School versus Jackson High game at http://www.nfhsnetwork.com/events/66220. Play-by-play action and color commentary were called by Monroe County Achievement Center's Jim Waite and Mary Persons High School's Robby Jones, both uniquely suited for the duty with each having extensive coaching experience and specific knowledge of the students who are playing, Coach Waite and Coach Jones worked with Mary Persons High School students Brewer McClendon and Zach Hogg to make the inaugural broadcast happen. This year, Mary Persons will broadcast all home games live and in real time on the NFHS Network, and the school plans to expand to all football games, home and away, included in the streamcast next year. Other athletic team events will be featured as students are trained to produce and engineer the events for quality streamcasts. Mary Persons High School football events and other athletic team games will be subscriber-based events, and you can learn more about subscribing to watch the games on your tablet, smartphone, computer, or smartTV at http://www.nfhsnetwork.com/channels/mary-persons-forsyth-georgia/subscribe. Subscribers have the option to use the NFHS app for iPhone. Mary Persons High School will receive subscription funds which will be used to fund student learning opportunities. Student activities like concerts, honors programs, and graduation will be streamed without a subscription requirement. Mary Persons High School is excited about the opportunity to give our community access to a streamcast that benefits our students directly as they learn as producers, camera operators, and sound engineers. We are giving students the opportunity to get real-world experience by creating a worldwide broadcast that features fellow Mary Persons High School students, and the proceeds from those broadcasts will benefit all Mary Persons students. MP Principal Jim Finch noted, "Our vision is to expand this from our current print journalism curriculum to digital format broadcast journalism and broadcasting engineering types of curricula."

Hubbard Elementary Launches Fifth Grade Leadership Academy
Hubbard Strong Fifth Grade Leadership Academy had its inaugural meeting recently at Samuel E. Hubbard Elementary School. The program is called "I Believe," and it is led by the 5th grade teachers. Approximately 45 parents and students came together to build better relationships and learn about leadership. Breakout sessions were held to discuss the meaning of leadership, to set goals and create action plans to meet those goals, to better understand using data to evaluate progress, and to build relationships between parents, students, and teachers through team building games. The session concluded with a meal. All 5th graders received I Believe t-shirts to remind them that their parents and their school believe that they will succeed at anything they choose to do. Future sessions are being planned that will include more team-building, conflict resolution ideas, and a community outreach effort. A parent-teacher planning committee for the next session is being created. Community members interested in supporting the program should contact Susan Curtis, fifth grade teacher.

KBSutton Students Learn First Amendment Rights and Peaceful Assembly
On the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, KB Sutton's fifth grade students rallied outside the school to exercise their rights to assemble and protest peacefully. Mrs. Jennifer Jenkins, fifth grade science and social studies teacher, challenged each class to practice using their freedom of speech and their right to assemble peacefully by uniting with a single purpose and protesting in a designated area in front of the school. Students brainstormed school-related issues they felt needed amending, and after a majority vote they prepared for protest. Each group involved a student leader who gave a speech that began with "We have a dream..." They learned to be risk-takers, to stand up when they believe a change is needed, and to join together peacefully for a cause that could even change the area or country they live in some day.
