A Message from the Superintendent...
Monroe County Schools Announces
New Enrollment Requirements

Monroe County Schools has instituted a new enrollment procedure effective today, August 14, 2013.  This new set of requirements, Administrative Regulation JCB-R(1) School Admissions under Board Policy JCB School Admissions is effective for all new students.  Students whose parents or legal guardians enrolled them during the summer of 2013 may be required to submit additional documents as set forth in JCB-R(1) in an effort to ensure there has not been falsification of Monroe County residency status.

This regulation, which supports the Board of Education's enrollment policy, was reviewed by the Board of Education last night, and the members agreed that this is a protocol which will support our schools' efforts to educate Monroe County residents.  The Board further agreed the intent is to protect Monroe County tax payers from baring the burden of educating students who are supposed to be attending schools in other counties.  The new enrollment protocols were developed after reviewing other districts' procedures from across the state (Lee County, Fayette County, Forsyth County, and Gwinnett County require similar documents).

Starting with enrollment for Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten in the spring,MCS will follow the new requirements for all enrollees and even returning students in August of 2014.

If you have questions or need additional clarification, please do hesitate to email us at monroe.messages@monroe.k12.ga.us.  We will compile those inquiries into a single "frequently asked questions (FAQ)" document that can be shared through Monroe Messages and through various media outlets.

Homeless students, under the provisions of the McKinney-Vento Act, will be enrolled at the time of enrollment regardless of home status.  Documentation will be collected so that the student may participate in the school while seeking to establish true residency as defined by the McKinney-Vento Act.

All new enrollees, as of August 13, 2013, will be required to sign an Affidavit of Residency.  You will also be asked to sign an Affidavit of Residency, which can and will be used in a court of law should we find that the information you used to enroll your child was falsely given.

Monroe County Schools reserves the right to deny enrollment if possible falsification of information has taken place or that the student does not reside at the residence stated in the registration paperwork.   Monroe County Schools reserves the right to check home occupancy status prior to full enrollment in the Monroe County Schools.  Multiple home visits may be made if residency cannot be confirmed to the Monroe County Schools' satisfaction. Should the district suspect, or receive information that you do not live where you stated, the district has the right to request further documentation at any time during the child's enrollment so that the enrolling parent/guardian must establish and prove residency.

Respectfully Submitted,

Anthony Pack
