Share the Road Safely with Buses
School buses are one of the safest forms of transportation on the road today, and we need community support to keep our students safe as they travel to and from our schools.

Remember...

It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. In the last several years,  Monroe County Schools' bus drivers have witnessed cars pass on the left and sometimes right side of buses as they are stopped to pick up students.  This endangers our students, and  we need your help and patience as we all work to get students to and from schools safely.

School buses use yellow flashing lights to alert motorists that they are preparing
to stop to load or unload children. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign
arm signals to motorists that the bus is stopped and children are getting on or off the bus.

Traffic in both directions should stop when students are entering or exiting a school bus.

The area ten feet around the bus is most susceptible to accidents for boys and girls. Make sure that you are stopping your car far enough away from the bus so that students can board and exit safely.

Be alert!  Children may run as they exit the bus, and others may lag behind, so watch for all of the riders to depart or enter safely.

A Message from Nutrition Services: Welcome to a new school year!
The School Nutrition Department is excited to have another opportunity to provide your child with nutritionally balanced meals that promote exceptional student achievement and learning. We invite you to come eat a delicious and healthful meal with your child in his/her school cafeteria.

FREE AND REDUCED MEAL APPLICATION - Have you returned the new free and reduced price meal application? It is printed on yellow paper this year and was mailed to your home in late July with an addressed stamped envelope for returning to our office. If you did not receive an application to your home, please pick one up from your child's school office or from the school nutrition manager.   You may also come to the School Nutrition Central Office at the Board Office and obtain an application or call 994-5609 and request one. The same instructions remain; complete one application per family. Information on your application is kept with total confidentiality and will not be used for any other purpose. If your application is denied, you may re-apply at any time during the year. If you were approved for free or reduced price meals last school year, we must have an updated application on file at the beginning of this school year for your child to continue receiving the benefits.

MEAL PRICES - In January 2011, a federal law was passed that requires school systems to increase the price of school lunches to help close the gap between the federal reimbursement rates of a fully-paid meal and a free meal. Therefore, Monroe County Schools are being mandated to gradually increase our lunch prices until we meet the target identified by the law. Breakfast prices and reduced meal prices will remain the same, but lunch prices for full-paying students and adults will increase $0.10. The 2013-2014 meal prices will be as follows:

Breakfast

Lunch

Elementary:

$1.00

Elementary:

$2.00

Middle/High:

$1.25

Middle/High:

$2.25

Reduced:

$0.30

BOE adults:

BOE adults:

You will be able to prepay for meals by the week, month, or year as you did last year. A price list with prices extended for each grade level is available on our website. You can also obtain this listing from your child's school nutrition manager. Our student account system records each transaction using confidential account numbers.

The School Nutrition Program will continue to offer the ability for parents to monitor their child's meal account balance, make online payments into their child's account, and receive low balance email alerts. As a reminder, we have upgraded to a new program (mySchoolBucks) which allows parents to view their child's account history online. Parents can see exactly what meals and extra items their child purchased. In addition, this program is web-based so all activity is "live;" therefore, parents won't have the 24-hour delay that many experienced with Cafeteria Cash. To learn more about My School Bucks or to set up an account id, visit Monroe County Schools Nutrition site or http://www.myschoolbucks.com .

MEAL CHARGES - While we encourage parents to prepay for their child's meals, we also understand that it is sometimes difficult for parents to keep up with their child's account balance. Therefore, we allow students to charge a minimal number of meals. Elementary school students are allowed to charge up to three breakfasts and three lunches. Middle school students are allowed to charge up to $5.00. High school students are allowed to charge one meal. If your child's account reaches a negative balance, we will communicate with you through phone calls and charge statements to notify you of the charges. If the charges become excessive and remain unpaid, your child may be given an alternative meal. For more specific information regarding the charge procedure at your child's school, please review your child's student handbook or reference the information on the Nutrition web site.

SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS - The School Nutrition Program will work to accommodate students who have special dietary needs when the needs are accompanied by a physician's request. Before we can make accommodations, we must have a Modified School Meals form completed and signed by a licensed physician. Parents can obtain this form from the School Nutrition Central Office, your child's school nurse or school nutrition manager, or by visiting us on the web.

BREAKFAST - Please encourage your child to eat breakfast at home or at school. Studies show that students who eat a nutritious breakfast are tardy less and absent from school less, spend less time out of class for behavior problems, and perform better on tests. Our breakfast program is expanding every year. All SNP staff looks forward to greeting your students each morning for breakfast and each day for lunch.

OFFER VS. SERVE - Students in grades 3-12 participate in Offer vs. Serve at lunch. This allows these students to choose the fruits and vegetables they want each day. In addition, students also have a choice of entrees each day. As a part of the USDA NEW menu meal pattern, it is necessary for all students receiving a school lunch to choose either a fruit or a vegetable or both.

CHECK US OUT ON THE WEB - If you have not visited our website, please do so at your convenience. You will find the nutritional analysis of the foods we serve, monthly menus, health inspection scores, educational websites related to nutrition and health, contact information for school nutrition staff, and other helpful information.

Please feel free to contact your child's school nutrition manager anytime during the year:

Employees:  Safety is Important

As we start the school year, employees are reminded that safety is important. Typical accidents and injuries can be prevented.  Floors have been freshly polished. Sometimes the floors are very slick. Also, with the extra rainy conditions we have had this summer, the possibility of tracking water on these floors can make them a slip or fall hazard. Make sure floor mats are located at each exterior door and are maintained so they are not folded or sticking up causing trip hazards.

  • Use wet floor signs to warn staff about possible hazards. Watch where you walk so the wet floor signs do not trip you up.
  • Hot weather of summer causes the water fountains to be used more often by thirsty students.
  • Watch for wet areas and spills at the water fountains. Clean spills and wet areas as soon as possible.
  • Teachers will be decorating walls and placing posters around for their students' enjoyment. Many times teachers and staff will use their chairs or classroom desks to stand in and reach higher.
  • Chairs and desks are to sit in - not to stand in.
  • Make sure your staff members have ladders or step stools available for climbing to reach higher.
  • The type of shoe an employee wears can cause slip trip or fall accidents.
  • Do not allow flip flops or other shoe that can easily dislodge from foot.
  • High heels are also an issue since many walkways have grooves and grates that can catch on small heel and cause a trip.
  • Cafeteria and janitorial workers should be wearing a rubber sole, slip resistant shoe.
  • Organize classroom to allow sufficient room for walking and eliminate trip hazards.
  • Book bags should have a storage area out of walkways.
  • Extension cords and cables should not be run across walkways unless you tape them down so your foot doesn't catch on them and cause a fall.
  • Look before you step!  Especially, when you are walking backwards
  • Look before you sit down in rolling chairs. They may slide away and out from under you!
  • Watch for students! Students will dart out in front of you or they may have feet that are in the aisles. Watch where you are going! Look back before stepping back!
