Thank you to those who answer the calling every day to influence the future by teaching our students today.
"If you plan for a year, plant a seed. If for ten years, plant a tree. If for a hundred years, teach the people. When you sow a seed once, you will reap a single harvest. When you teach the people, you will reap a hundred harvests."--Kuan Chung
"Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher."--Japanese proverb
"One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child."--Carl Jung

Governor Nathan Deal Declares May 8 as School Nurse Appreciation Day Thank you to Monroe County Schools Nurses
School nurses work tirelessly not only to keep our students healthy and ready for academic success, but also act as a bridge between the school community, parents and health care providers. The more than 1,700 school nurses in Georgia's public schools promote wellness, provide much needed health counseling for struggling families and conduct vision, hearing and dental screenings for students. School nurses are a critical part of the education community that improve the overall well-being of our students and help the community understand the link between health and learning.
For those and many other reasons, Gov. Nathan Deal has declared May 8 as School Nurse Appreciation Day in Georgia.

A Message from Monroe County Schools Counselors
Middle School Transitions
School transition is a process that prepares students, families, schools, and communities to develop the necessary skills, knowledge and relationships to assist students in successfully moving from one setting to another. In this instance, students are transitioning or "changing" from elementary school to middle school. It is important for students and families to begin this transition prior to entering middle school to allow time for the student to get acclimated to the rigor of the curriculum in addition to a new school climate. A smooth transition into middle school will help your child form a positive first impression and realistic expectation of what middle school is really like, increasing their ability to succeed in school.
Five areas of focus have been identified as particularly important to the life of a middle school student as they transition. They include:
* Social and Emotional Changes
* Organizational and Environmental Factors
* Academics
* Developmental Growth
* College and Career Readiness
Upon entry into middle school, students are bombarded with environmental, social, emotional, and physical changes that may overwhelm some. Lack of specific skills needed to cope with these changes can have significant effects on an individual student's ability to adjust, as well as his or her academic achievement, future aspirations, and overall feelings of self-worth.

A Message from Monroe County Schools Nurses
Part II of Children Need More Rest
More Sleep =
Less Weight
A recent study by Northwestern University showed that as little as one extra hour of sleep would lower a child's chances of becoming overweight. Children in the elementary years need to sleep 10 to 11 hours each night. Experts suspect that lack of sleep disrupts metabolism and appetite causing children to be hungrier and eat more.
To help your child get that extra hour of sleep, move his or her bedtime up 10 minutes every night. Keep your child away from the computer, TV and video games an hour or so before bed. They stimulate the nervous system and make it harder to fall asleep and/or stay asleep. It is best to put these items in a playroom or den and avoid placing them in your child's bedroom. A warm bath and quiet reading is excellent activities for the hour before bedtime.
