System Named Digital School District in National Rankings
Monroe County Schools has been named one of the top ten mid-sized districts in the nation in a recent digital education ranking.
Top-ranked school districts have been announced in the ninth annual Digital School Districts Survey by the Center for Digital Education (CDE) and the National School Boards Association (NSBA). The survey showcases exemplary school boards' and districts' use of technology to govern the district, communicate with students, parents and the community and to improve district operations. Monroe County Schools ranked tenth in the national compilation of mid-sized districts serving 3000 to 12000 students.
"Through the leadership of local school boards, we continue to see that technology tools and practices are transforming America's public schools," said Thomas J. Gentzel, NSBA Executive Director. "The school districts honored in the 2013 Digital Districts Survey serve as national models for education technology innovations."
The top ten rankings are awarded to those school boards/districts that most fully implement technology benchmarks in the evolution of digital education, as represented in the survey questions. All U.S. public school districts are eligible to participate in the survey with the three classifications based on size of enrollment.

MPHS Grad Called Up to pitch for MLB Cincinnati Reds
Former Mary Persons High School baseball player Justin Freeman saw action in the Major Leagues this week.
Freeman, a 2005 graduate of MPHS, was temporarily called up to the Cincinnati Reds on Monday. He saw action in the Reds/Phillies game on Wednesday night. The right-handed relief pitcher got the call from the Reds to replace the roster spot of Reds' ace Johnny Cueto, who went on the 15-day disabled list.
The Mary Persons alum had a 1.80 ERA in four appearances at Triple-A Louisville. Freeman had a 2.91 ERA with 16 saves for Double-A Pensacola in 2012. The 26-year-old had a 3.60 ERA in 222 minor league appearances. Freeman was a 32nd round draft by the Reds in 2008 after a college career at Kennesaw State.
After the brief stint with the MLB Reds, Freeman is now back at the team's Louisville farm club. But he got the attention of Reds manager Dusty Baker, "I'm glad we got him into the game last night. I hate to have a kid come up here and go right back without pitching," Baker said. "He learned something." We wish this MPHS graduate the best of luck in the Major Leagues.
