Read Across Georgia Day is Tuesday, March 19

Here's a great opportunity to do something special for Georgia's Youngest Learners. As part of the First Lady Sandra Deal's "Read Across Georgia," DECAL is again sponsoring "Georgia Reads Aloud Day," on Tuesday, March 19, 2013.

On this day, parents, teachers, and the entire community are encouraged to make a special effort to read to children of all ages. Classrooms are encouraged to enter a contest for the Most Books Read between the hours of 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM on March 19. The winning classroom will receive a special visit and reading from First Lady Deal and Bobby Cagle, MSW Commissioner.

Downloadable book lists, bookmarks and certificates for storytellers are available on the DECAL website. Last year, students across the state read 13,993 books over 13 hours. We can't wait to see the results this year!  You'll find more information at http://www.decal.ga.gov.

Remember, from birth to third grade, we learn to read and from fourth grade on up we read to learn. Thanks for your enthusiasm and support.  For more information on Read Across Georgia Day, click here.

 A Message from School Counselors
Community Service is Important for the College Application Process

Submitted by Tasha Burston, MPHS Counselor

From http://oceancity.patch.com/blog_posts/the-importance-of-community-service-in-the-college-application-process

When should your student get involved in community service? Now!

It truly is never too early to get involved. Community service is a huge part of the college application equation. It plays an even bigger part in the scholarship application process. The middle school years are the ideal time to get involved in something service-oriented and continue that involvement through high school. But, as it is said, it's never too late to get started, so if you did not have a community service foundation going into high school, now is the time to build it.

Colleges are looking for well-rounded individuals who are involved in their communities, as it goes to follow that students who immerse themselves in hometown activities and charities will do so once on campus.

There are so many opportunities to get involved in the community. Joining is the easiest way to get involved. If you're most interested in an area where there are no groups or clubs, start your own. You can collect canned goods for existing food cupboards and contribute to school drives, help feed the hungry at area shelters, or start your own charitable operation. Match your talents and your interests to the community's needs.

Love animals? Volunteer at a shelter. Good with small children? Volunteer at your church's nursery. An avid reader? Donate your used books to your teachers for use in their classroom lending libraries, donate them to your school library, or donate to a group like Books Without Borders.

Long-term involvement signifies loyalty, an ability to stick with something after the newness wears off. It is an important trait, one that colleges value.

Of course, involvement in school activities is as important as community involvement. There are dozens of programs --  all offering opportunities for student involvement. Encourage your student to run for an office. Serve on Student Council. Play a sport. Act in a play. Tutor a classmate. Join the band. The point is to do something, do it consistently, do it well, and get noticed!
