A Message from Counselors

Career Development

Alison Mitchell

MCMS Counselor

Would you like to know how

you can help your child become successful in life with a great career?

According to Dr. Lawrence K. Jones, there are eight positive ways that parents can increase career success for their child:

Encourage your children to get the most education possible. The more education a person gains will give them a chance to have a plethora of job opportunities.

Strengthen their self-understanding. The more activities your child experiences the more he/ she will know about their own personal likes, dislikes and capabilities. You can explore the different personality tests online and choose one that you like.

Develop their knowledge about work. Explore the internet and library to find different careers that your child may be interested in, or take a field trip to one of those places.

Teach them decision making skills. Sit down and discuss how your child can make a positive choice and the consequences of making the wrong choices.

Value gender equity and cultural diversity. Inform your child that he/she will need to be able to work well with people with other ethnic, social, and educational backgrounds.

Become aware of career resources. You and your child should explore the career resources available in your area. Many colleges, high schools, and libraries have career resources for you.

Help them become skill oriented. Parents need to help their children learn skills that are "marketable, transferable, and motivating". Your child will need the basic skills that are required of all high-performance employees in the 21st Century.

Observe the effects of part-time work. Is this work helping your child or making it harder to complete his school work? According to Dr. Jones, studies have shown that teens who work more hours per week earn lower grades in school.

Welcome to the Wellness Zone at
KBSutton Elementary School
In the month of February, KBSutton Elementary School will establish a "Wellness Zone."  All month long, the school will be focusing on different areas of healthy eating and physical activity in an effort to create a "Wellness Zone" for our school and community.

"The mission of the "Wellness Zone" health promotion program is to increase wellness

awareness within the school and to designate the school as a healthy resource center for the surrounding community. The objective is to create a healthy environment that emphasizes nutritious eating and increased daily physical activity that is, also, accessible by the community."

KBSutton Silo Sprint winners recently opened their school's Wellness Zone along with Mrs. Alicia Elder, Principal. Also on hand for the opening were (back, from left) Mr. Jackson Daniel, Assistant Superintendent; Mrs. Angie Dillon, Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Mike Hickman, Assistant Superintendent, Mrs. Lisa Singley, Nutrition Director; and Mr. Jason Morrow, Physical Education Teacher.

 A Message from Monroe Nurses

Take this True Or False Parenting Test

1. The best way to keep food safe from morning until lunch is by using a tightly latched or zipped lunch box.

FALSE-Food can spoil once it has been unrefrigerated for two or more hours. To keep lunch at food-safe temperatures for up to 6 hours, freeze sandwiches and refrigerate other foods overnight and include an ice pack.

2. A child's shoes fit properly if there is about inch space between longest toe and tip of shoe.

TRUE-Be sure your child's toes have wriggle room. Try on shoes at the end of the day when the feet are at their largest. Try on both shoes, one foot is always larger than the other. Stand up and walk around for several minutes being sure to have on appropriate socks.

3. Children should exercise about 30 minutes a day.

FALSE-The CDC recommends one hour or more a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity. Turn off the TV and Video games.

4. For a child who is a competitive athlete, 3 hours of practice five days a week is appropriate.

TRUE-Children should not practice or play a sport more than 20 hours a week unless followed closely by a doctor or medical trainer. Over exertion can lead to sports injuries, joint problems and lack of motivation.

5. Chocolate milk along with pretzels is a nutritious after-school snack.

TRUE-Low-fat milk even with chocolate provides calcium, potassium and vitamin D as well as protein. Whole wheat pretzels are best.

6. Children need 9-11 hours of sleep each night.

TRUE-Children ages 5 to 12 need 10-11 hours sleep and most teenagers do best with 9 hours. Getting just one hour less sleep each night can hurt a child's ability to learn.
