MONROE MESSAGES
A Publication of Monroe County Schools

Congratulations to the 2013
School Teachers of the Year

This year's Teachers of the Year for each school are pictured above.  (clockwise from left) Sophe Pope, Mary Persons High School; Adrienne Love-Tucker, Monroe County Achievement Center; Melanie Lockett, Hubbard Elementary School; Joann Binns, KBSutton Elementary School; Amy Calley, TGScott Elementary School; and Dr. Myra Boyd, Monroe County Middle School.

For the Teacher of the Year selection process, each school has a committee composed of the principal, current teacher of the year, and another certified employee selected by the school leadership team. This committee selects three to four candidates from the school, considering the criteria from the state, to be placed on the ballot. The certified personnel at the school vote to select the Teacher of the Year for the school.

After each school teacher of the year is selected by the teachers of the school, the candidate is asked to complete an application for system teacher of the year. This application includes seven different areas. External judges from other counties score each application. The results are tallied to determine the system winner.

The system teacher of the year will be recognized at the April Board of Education meeting.

School Teachers of the Year are pictured with Mr. Anthony Pack, Superintendent, and Assistant Superintendents, Mrs. Angie Dillon, Dr. Mike Hickman, and Mr. Jackson Daniel.

MPHS FFA Chapter Earns Georgia Green Industry Association Junior Certification

The Mary Persons High FFA members long hours of practiced paid off as they took home their Georgia Green Industry Junior Certification.   Led by FFA sponsor, Mr. Bill Waldrep, the FFA Chapter earned Georgia Green Industry Junior Certification which  consists of a written exam and plant identification practicum. The written test is based on the educational objectives of the Georgia Agriculture Education horticulture pathway curriculum and standard practices in the horticulture industry. To pass the written exam, a student must answer thirty-five questions correctly. The second portion of the certification is plant identification. Fifty plants will be displayed for students to identify.

The Junior Plant Certification exam is given twice a year administered by Georgia Green Industry professionals. This year's first testing was held in conjunction with the 2013 WinterGreen Conference at the Gwinnett Convention Center in Duluth. Upon arrival, students prepared and attempted the rigorous certification testing. The students spent the remaining hours of the day attending career educational sessions, followed by the opportunity to meet and talk with more than 100 horticulture industry representatives. The purpose of the junior certification is to connect students with Georgia Green Industry linking classroom instruction directly to real life. Additionally the certification process establishes guidelines for academic achievement and competence while promoting students in the future of the horticulture industry. To date, Georgia FFA has 121 students who have passed all requirements for Junior GGIA certification. Additionally numerous FFA members have passed a significant part of the testing and have plans to complete their certification at the state FFA Convention in April 2013.

This event is one of the many educational activities in which the FFA members apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations. The Georgia FFA Association has the third largest FFA membership in the nation with over 35,000 members. FFA strives to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

A Message from Monroe Nurses

WINTER TIPS FROM YOUR SCHOOL NURSE

  • Check the weather report every day and be sure your child wears appropriate clothing and coats for that day's weather.
  • Place a Chap Stick® or other lip moisturizer in your child's book bag during the cooler months.
  • Apply moisturizer to your child's face and hands during periods of cold and dry weather to protect against chapping.
  • Students do go outside for recess on days when it is cold outside. Please send your child to school with a hat and gloves or mittens. You may choose to keep them in their book bag so that they are available all of the time.
  • DO NOT send your child to school for 24 hours after having a temperature of 100 or above, even if it returns to normal with Tylenol or Motrin.  He/she should be fever free for 24 hours without taking medication before retuning to school.
  • If your child has a cough or runny nose or nasal congestion, please send an over-the-counter medication to school with your child.  Be sure to include a note containing the amount and time that the medication should be given along with the time of the last dose you gave him/her.
