We remember Newtown
Monroe County Schools joins other schools across Georgia as we fly flags at halfstaff Monday and Tuesday in remembrance of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.
The tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut is a reminder to our entire community about the importance of school safety. Emergency response plans, which have been developed in partnership with our community's first responders, are in place at each of our schools. Each school regularly practices emergency response drills, and we continually evaluate our safety and security procedures. We will remember the students, teachers, and administration of Newtown, Connecticut as we review our procedures and assure our students that they are safe in our schools.
Our school counselors, teachers, and other administrators will be available for students throughout the week if they have questions or concerns. |
Give input for 2013-2014 Monroe County Schools Calendar HERE.
The Board of Education will adopt the 2013-2014 school calendar at their January meeting. Creating a calendar that meets instructional needs while accommodating the preferences of all of our stakeholders is a challenge in good economic times. With budget concerns taken into consideration, a calendar must be built that maximizes instructional time while conserving costs for energy, transportation, physical plant operations.
The survey is set to close at 5:00 pm on December 20, 2012.
At the January Board of Education meeting, members will consider input and vote regarding the school calendar for 2013-2014. The meeting will be January 8, 2013 at 7 p.m. |
IMPORTANT: 2012-2013 Calendar Change
At the December meeting, the Board of Education voted to change the February 28, 2013 early release day to be a full day for students with Parent/Teacher Conferences scheduled from 4 PM to 7 PM.

We Wish You Stress-Free Holidays Holidays are when memories are made, so we wish you the best this season. Here are some tips for keeping you and yours stress-free during this time of the year.
1. Dont' give into the "Gimmes."
"I want, I want!" may be a familar phrase heard from your child that may wear you down at the holidays, but giving into every whim your child has can cause you long-term financial stress. Mental health professionals emphasize that it is okay to tell a child that a gift is too expensive and that Santa Claus has limited funds. It is also okay to limit a child's list to the items that they want the most -- not just items that flash at them during commercials.
2. Celebrate with traditions
Celebrate traditions that don't cost alot of extra money. Bake cookies, get in the car and go see the neighborhood lights, cook together, and watch holiday movies and shows. Explain to children that traditions should be based in being together as a family -- not just based on getting the latest presents.
3. Seek out help if you and yours need it.
If holiday gift giving is not within your means, then seek out assistance through local organizations. Monroe County Schools, through Ms. Gwen Byrd, reaches many families who need assistance at this time of the year and throughout the year.
4. Rest, relax, and be realistic.
Enjoy the time, and relish the quiet. Getting to all of the local events may be a goal, but don't let traditions get in the way of relaxing and resting. The holidays are a perfect time to help your child read. When you all are reading as a family and enjoying music of the season, you are making memories that they will remember.
5. Stay safe.
