The Gift of Pentecost "When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. ...All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit..." Acts 2: 1, 4
On Pentecost, God manifests in three new ways¸ all of which are rich with meaning. The rushing wind displays God's immanence and power; the fire signifies the One who is the light of the world; the tongues denote the Word who was in the beginning, reflected in the life-giving communion of human conversation. Three signs of God's presence appeared to them - the wind embracing them, the fire resting on each¸ and the gift of new language coming variously to those who had heard God's word and heeded it. In a consummate moment of community, Jesus' followers were not only called but called together.
