Evidenced-Based Decision Making

By now, your students have probably taken the PSSA, but unfortunately you won't see the results of those assessments for several months. With OGAP, you can use evidence to inform your instruction on an ongoing basis. Using OGAP ongoing formative assessment regularly as part of your math instruction has several benefits for you and your students:
  • OGAP items are designed to elicit important information about student thinking and understanding, not just mastery of skills and concepts.
  • The OGAP Progressions can help you make sense of your students developing understandings, provide actionable feedback, and build on their understandings to help develop more sophisticated strategies and understanding for multiplication, division, and fractions.
  • Administering OGAP items as exit slips allows you to gauge and respond to student understanding as a unit is progressing, not just at the end of a unit.
  • Using the OGAP Progression 'mind set' you can gather evidence and take action as students are working, during classroom discussions, or at the beginning or end of a lesson.
  • The OGAP Progression can help students take ownership over their own learning
  • Recording and analyzing student work in the eTool can help identify trends and assess student growth over time
Action Items
  • Get back to the practice of administering exit cards and collecting and taking action on the evidence. Aim to give two items a week or more. (See Choosing an Item).
  • After giving an item, use the OGAP quick sort to get a picture of your students' developing understandings, issues and misconceptions, and next instructional steps based on the evidence.
  • Make it a priority to discuss student work with your colleagues in your next PLC.
  • Reach out to your OGAP coach if you'd like help with any of this.
