New report and webinar examine teacher turnover trends and induction programs

Roughly half a million U.S. teachers either move or leave the profession each year -- attrition that costs the United States up to $2.2 billion annually. In a new report by the Alliance for Excellent Education and the New Teacher Center, Mariana Haynes explores teacher turnover and the impacts of induction support for new teachers. CPRE's Richard Ingersoll provided data and analysis for the report.

Ingersoll joined Haynes and others this month to discuss the current teaching force trends, research on induction programs, and systems of teacher support. Watch the full panel discussion here.

Center Spotlight
Center for Benefit-Cost Studies of Education at Teachers College, Columbia University
The Center for Benefit-Cost Studies of Education (CBCSE) at Teachers College works to understand the cost-effectiveness of educational programs in order to help policymakers optimize resource allocation and enhance productivity in education.

In MOOCs: Expectations and Reality, authors Fiona M. Hollands and Devayani Tirthali provide one of the first examinations of massive open online courses (MOOCSs). Do MOOCs meet their goals of large-scale, low-cost, quality education? To answer their question, Hollands and Tirthali studied 62 different institutions currently offering MOOCs or other online learning courses.

CPRE senior researcher Phil Sirinides presented at the 2014 QRIS National Meeting "Building High Quality Systems through QRIS". His presentation What Are We Learning About Quality, QRIS, and Child Outcomes included findings from new research examining linkages between quality and children's development. Dr. Sirinides discussed the ongoing CPRE study of Keystone STARS as well as the challenges and opportunities of applying research findings to QRIS design and implementation. Because investigations of complex systems such as QRIS are limited when only traditional evaluation methods are considered, Dr. Sirinides also presented Innovative Research Methods for QRIS Evaluation, in which he introduced researchers to other methodologies that could be used for QRIS research to understand implementation and effectiveness, including event history analysis and instrumental variables. Dr. Sirinides can be reached at [email protected].

CPRE researcher Bobbi Newman was accepted to the National Center for Education Research (NCER) in the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education's Summer Research Training Institute on cluster-randomized trials (CRTs) in education at Northwestern University. The purpose of the training was to prepare current education researchers to plan, design, conduct, and interpret CRTs. The institute provided intensive training led by Dr. Larry Hedges of Northwestern on planning, implementing, and analyzing data for CRTs.  Over a 100 researchers applied and Newman was one of only thirty applicants accepted to the institute.
