Making Wishes

Come True!

Nine-year-old Skyler, wished to go to a Canucks game to meet his hero, Ryan Kesler. In fact, Skyler is such a big fan of Kesler that when his parents had another child and Skyler was allowed to name the baby, he named him Kesler! That's right, Skyler's brother's official name is Kesler! When TD Canada Trust generously offered their box-suite to Kids Up Front for the Canucks vs Calgary Flames hockey game on February 9, we offered the tickets to Make-A-Wish Foundation and Skyler's wish came true.  Not only did Skyler get to meet Kesler, but he met the entire Canucks team!

Thanks to TD Canada Trust and the Vancouver Canucks for making Skyler's wish come true!

Young kindred spirit discovers

It's A Wonderful Life!

Imagine being 15 years old, taken from the only home you've known and thrust into a new life in a new city where the culture and societal 'norms' are entirely outside of your comfort zone.

Moving for Baby became a necessity. Life as she knew it on her native reserve was already taking a toll on this vibrant young girl. Continuing her education seemed impossible, delinquency was considered entertainment, despondency had set in and, despite her tender years, alcohol was quickly dimming the light on her future.

Baby, or Tessa as she now prefers to be called, is making the effort to better her life.  Living in a stable home environment with her older sister, she is helping the family make ends meet by caring for her nieces and nephews.  As one of the youngest students enrolled at Guildford Learning Centre, Tessa is receiving the basic education, life skills training, career prep and intensive counseling support offered at this model non-traditional school.  Tessa is succeeding, earning student of the month honours in October, a teacher nominated accolade recognizing her effort, attitude, diligence and hard work.

Thanks to the support of CIBC and the Arts Club Theatre Company, Tessa received one of the 162 tickets Kids Up Front provided for the live theatre performance of It's a Wonderful Life in 2012.  Together, we have not only created a new aficionado of live theatre, but reaffirmed Tessa's often fragile self-worth, strengthening her resolve to create her own brighter future.

In February, Marty Zlotnik stepped down as President of the Board after being in this role since October 2008. A respected community leader and philanthropist, Marty has been an exemplary ambassador of Kids Up Front and opened doors to his circle of influence to expand our reach into the community, increase awareness, and garner support. A loyal and most generous supporter, Marty always acted with deep humility and without expectation for recognition.

Marty has been an influential force for Kids Up Front. It was in his recounting of kids living in hardship and poverty who have little opportunity to experience the sense of joy and wonder that Kids Up Front can give them, that his true connection to the cause and motivation behind his commitment was revealed - he was moved by the opportunity to make a positive impact on the kids and knew he could help.

In stepping down from our Board, Marty can be assured he has been a huge help in making a difference in the lives of multi-thousands of kids and families.

As Kids Up Front Vancouver transgress to a new President and enters a new era, we will remain grateful to Marty for the foundation he has helped lay that will take Kids Up Front to the next level. Marty is stepping down, but we are not saying goodbye, as he has graciously offered to be a member of our Advisory Committee.
