Today is Homeless Day on the Hill -
PLEASE CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND SENATOR
Today (Thursday, March 8) is Homeless Day on the Hill. Organized by the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless, it is an important day to offer support for important policy matters that impact our work to end homelessness. I hope that some of you will be able to attend!
If you are not able to attend in person, please take a minute to call your Representative or Senator and share your thoughts! This is one of the key moments during the session to grab their attention. To find your Representative and Senator, click here or call (651) 296-0504 for Senate information or (651) 296-2146 for House information.
Please take this time to share your thoughts and any perspectives you have from your own work or involvement with people experiencing homelessness. Some sample talking points are also available here. The following are legislative priorities for Hearth Connection in 2012:
- Supporting housing infrastructure bonds to expand the supply of supportive housing in Minnesota (House File 2485, Senate File 2073)
- Restoring funding to DHS' Long-Term Homeless Supportive Services Fund which experienced the loss of one-time funding in FY2011-2012 ; and
- Passing the Visible Child Act (House File 2698) to conduct better data analysis and coordinated planning to end child homelessness in Minnesota.
A call or short email today would be a great way to help our efforts!! |
Affordable Housing and Capital Bonds -
HOUSE COMMITTEE HOLDS HEARING TODAY
Today is not only Homeless Day on the Hill, but it's also the day that the Governor's proposal for housing infrastructure bonds will be heard in front of the House Jobs & Economic Development Committee (chaired by Rep. Bob Gunther). Homeless and affordable housing advocates are asking the Governor and State Legislature for full support of the housing appropriations bonds.
Bills in the House (HF 2485) and Senate (SF 2073) would provide additional funding for nonprofit housing bonds. Because the housing bonds would be used to support affordable housing across Minnesota, homelessness and affordable housing advocates in all parts of the state are encouraged to contact your legislators and ask them to support affordable housing through HF 2485 and SF 2073.
If you are a constituent of or have any connections to the following House Committee members - please be sure to let them know that you are supportive of House File 2485, which would provide $30 million for the construction of rehabilitation of supportive housing and $10 million for the construction or rehabilitation of public housing.
