RAA President Speaks to Chinese Delegation about US Regional Airline Industry
|
Releasing new industry statistics at a recent China Regional Aviation Conference in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, RAA President Roger Cohen underlined the regional airlines' critical role in the nation's air transportation system carrying 161.73 million passengers last year and accounting for one-half of the nation's flights. The sector provides important service to 658 US airports with 470 communities (71.4%) relying exclusively on regionals for their connection to the global economy. View the entire presentation here.
Cohen noted a more recent development of the regionals' increasing presence in international service between the US, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Regionals actually account for more than 50% of flights at many of the largest international hubs in the US, including Chicago O'Hare, New York LaGuardia, Houston, Philadelphia and both Washington DC airport, Reagan National and Dulles.
"There are three common themes that have helped support regional airline growth in the US over the nearly past four decades," said Cohen, identifying the necessity of serving passengers' needs; seamless connectivity; and government's role in investing public funds to stimulate growth.
Hosted by the Civil Aviation Management Institute of China, the three-day-event attracted nearly 300 delegates and was organized by the Ordos Government, Embraer China and Pratt & Whitney.

RAA will be participating in a case reaching the US Supreme Court, as the RAA Board unanimously endorsed joining together with A4A and the US Chamber of Commerce to file an amicus brief with the Court supporting the airline petitioner in Air Wisconsin Airlines Corporation v. William L. Hoeper. A number of briefs were filed, including from the United States, expressing concerns that the verdict would discourage other airlines from reporting potential security threats to TSA. RAA has been active on the case since the trial court in 2008, with Liam Connolly urging stronger government support of the industry position and Stacey Bechdolt Esq. officially signing the amicus for the association.
