RAA Advises FAA and Congress on Impact of Sequestration
As the nation readies for the fallout of sequestration, RAA continues to meet with FAA and Congressional representatives outlining the potential impact on regional airlines, which operate one-half of the nation's scheduled flights. The budget standoff is "an irresponsible game of chicken, with no winners," RAA Roger Cohen stated and was quoted in The New York Times "Federal Budget Cuts Pose Air Travel Headache" piece by Joe Sharkey. Cutbacks in smaller markets would create "delays and missed connections at the major hubs, such as Chicago O'Hare, Houston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Minneapolis, New York's La Guardia and Newark, and Washington Reagan, each where regional airlines account for more than half the daily flights," Cohen underlines. Regionals provide the only scheduled service to 470 communities - representing nearly three-fourths of the nation's passenger airports. These communities may be deeply harmed by sequestration, as reflected in FAA's recent announcement of potential staffing cutbacks and facility closings across the nation. "The traveling and shipping public will be the losers," Cohen adds, and the communities most dependent on scheduled service from regional airlines for their only connection to the global economy will be hurt the most.
