American Airlines Joins the American Red Cross to Aid Hurricane Sandy Victims PRNewswire (10/31/12) American Airlines and American Eagle are partnering with the American Red Cross to aid people affected by Hurricane Sandy. Members of the American Airlines AAdvantage program can support relief efforts by donating to the American Red Cross to help provide victims with shelter, food and other assistance. Through Nov. 30, AAdvantage members will earn a one-time award of 250 AAdvantage miles for a minimum donation of $50, or 500 AAdvantage miles for a donation of $100 or more to American Red Cross Disaster Relief.
Eagle CEO Says AMR Likely Will Try Again to Sell or Spin Off American's Regional Airline Associated Press (10/12/12) American Eagle CEO Daniel Garton anticipates that American Airlines' regional affiliate will still be sold or spun off as a separate company once American emerges from bankruptcy protection. "I think [parent company AMR's] conclusion will be the same, that the divestiture will be a positive, and that [Eagle] will be stable and stronger after emerging" from bankruptcy reorganization, he notes. American thinks it can realize savings by getting regional airlines to bid for its connecting-flight business rather than keeping the operation within the AMR family at Eagle, and Garton thinks Eagle will be all right in spite of American's September announcement that it will outsource some of that flying in Los Angeles and Dallas to SkyWest.
Hawaiian Airlines Acquires Turboprops to Fly to Lanai, Molokai Honolulu Star-Advertiser (10/17/12) Segal, David Hawaiian Airlines will offer flights to Molokai and Lanai starting next year as part of its new turboprop operation. The new routes fill the only gap in the company’s interisland service and allow the company to serve smaller airports in the state. The company bought its first ATR 42 twin-turboprop aircraft which seats up to 50 passengers, and will buy another in November. The new operation boosts competition with smaller airline Island Air, which will soon start using the same ATR 42 aircraft and phasing out its Bombardier de Havilland Dash 8 aircraft. Hawaiian Airlines CEO Mark Dunkerley said the ATR 42s are ideal for the less populated areas of the state, and the company is working on a new brand identity for the turboprop operation.
Mitsubishi Studies Faster MRJ Production Aviation Week (10/29/12) Perrett, Bradley Despite the April announcement that the first deliveries of its Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) would be delayed by as much as two years, growing interest in the MRJ set off by a recent preliminary agreement to provide U.S. carrier SkyWest with 100 of the aircraft is forcing Mitsubishi Aircraft to make careful efforts to ramp up the MRJ project. This effort is being led by Mitsubishi Aircraft's new project management office, which is led by strategic planning director Hirohide Takaseki. Takaseki says that the April delay was the result of documentation errors that have necessitated not only the remanufacture of certain parts, but a careful rechecking of documents against production process specifications. This has meant the hiring of additional engineers, some of whom are being borrowed from friendly manufacturers, an effort being organized and overseen by the project management office. Takaseki says that Mitsubishi is taking a cautious approach with its new production schedule, committing only to normal design refinements, with the hope of staying within the original $2.3 billion MRJ development budget. With the SkyWest agreement almost doubling the backlog of MRJ orders from 65 to 170, Takaseki says Mitsubishi is now hoping to have completed the first test flights of the new jet by the last quarter of 2013.
Midsize Markets Suffer Airline Neglect New York Times (10/22/12) Sharkey, Joe Focusing largely on major hubs and growing partnerships with international alliances, airlines have significantly reduced the number of flights at midsize and smaller regional airports, with those airports losing about 25 percent of their seats in the last two years, according to Boyd Group International. Michael Boyd, president of Boyd Group, says strategic decisions about air service are usually made in conjunction with global alliance partners, and are all about matching costs to revenues that can be generated by a route. "Airlines are no longer chasing passenger volume," says Boyd. As a result, the air travel system is shrinking, with no signs of any change in the next few years. Boyd goes so far as to say that airports sponsoring studies to attract new airlines and nonstop routes are wasting their money, and there are no airlines with a strong desire to add new regional capacity.
CommutAir Chooses ARINC AviNet Data Solution to Meet Canada Border Security Requirements TendersInfo (10/31/2012) CommutAir has chosen the ARINC AviNet Global Data Network Solution to transmit crew Advance Passenger Information to ensure adherence with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) passenger reporting requirements. The new proprietary reporting guidelines were created by CBSA in response to privacy and data quality concerns. On behalf of the carrier, ARINC will perform the required message format and communications protocol conversion to meet CBSA guidelines. CommutAir selected ARINC over major competitors based on product reliability, technical expertise, cost efficiency, and the ability to meet CBSA implementation schedules.
Silver Airways Expands Atlanta Routes Atlanta Business Chronicle (10/02/12) Williams, Dave Silver Airways, which this past summer began service to two small Atlanta-area cities, is expanding to five more destinations. Silver started daily service to Greenbrier, W.Va., and six-day service to Gainesville, Fla., back in August, and on Oct. 1 it launched daily flights between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Muscle Shoals, Ala., as well as the Mississippi cities of Greenville, Tupelo, Hattiesburg, and Meridian. Silver runs passenger service in 10 U.S. states and the Bahamas.
Pinnacle Airlines Comes to Tentative Pact with Association of Flight Attendants Wireless News (10/26/12) Pinnacle Airlines has reached a tentative agreement with the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), the legal representative of the Pinnacle Airlines Flight Attendant group. Pinnacle is seeking concessions from all of its employees in order to emerge successfully from Chapter 11 proceedings with a competitive cost structure. The two sides reached a tentative agreement on concessions that cover pay, retirement, work rules and benefits. The concessions would become effective when concessions are implemented for other labor groups and non-union employees.

Republic Airways, Caesars Entertainment Sign Three-Year Flight Agreement PRNewswire (10/25/12) Republic Airways and Caesars Entertainment have signed a three-year contract under which Republic's Republic Airlines subsidiary will operate five Embraer E190 aircraft to provide more than 1,500 flights annually for Caesars' customers throughout the United States. "We are very pleased to have been selected by Caesars to fulfill a portion of their dedicated air travel needs for the coming three years," said Republic Airways Chairman and CEO Bryan Bedford. KSU Salina Aviation Inks Hiring Agreement With Airline KSAL (10/25/12) An agreement between Kansas State University Salina and ExpressJet Airlines provides an opportunity for aviation students at the university to receive a conditional offer of employment as a first officer with the regional airline. "We look to hire the best, brightest and most qualified aviation professionals to join our team and look forward to this partnership with Kansas State University," said Darrin Greubel, pilot recruiting coordinator and manager of line operations at ExpressJet.
