Happy Halloween, Gorgeous!
We hope you're enjoying the changing leaves, cider mills, and all autumn has to offer! Remember to bring your friends to our annual Halloween Open House/Utica Anniversary Party at our Utica location (see Events) later this month! In this month's edition, we talk about the power of the brain when it comes to strength; getting stronger involves more than eating protein and strength training. Also, we "decode" the most popular ingredients in protein powders, so you know what you might be consuming. Please enjoy this and more, thank you for reading! Students: There will be a mini student show at the Halloween party. If you are interested in performing, please sign up in the studio.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
*You've received our new monthly newsletter because we met you at a class or a party with the studio. We hope you'll stay a part of our community so that we can send you updates about exciting changes at PFR. Brain Power Equals Muscle Power
You may have heard this said in the studios: "Believe it, imagine yourself doing it, and you will achieve it!" This is our advice when you struggle with...well...anything you're attempting in our classes. We've known believing in yourself and visualizing yourself accomplishing a specific move, as in PoleTRICKS, has the power to make goals happen faster, but we were surprised to learn you become physically stronger just by thinking about it regularly! Imagine how this could affect your training! What could you accomplish? What challenge could you overcome? What goals would you crush?
A study, in 2004, was conducted "to determine mental training-induced strength gains (without performing physical exercises) in the little finger abductor as well as in the elbow flexor muscles...". Thirty, young volunteers were split into groups. "The first group...was trained to perform "mental contractions" of little finger abduction (ABD); the second group...performed mental contractions of elbow (ELB) flexion; and the third group...was not trained but participated in all measurements and served as a control group". The last six people physically trained their finger abductions. The groups trained for 15 minutes, 5 days a week, for 12 weeks and obtained amazing results.
The ABD group increased their finger strength by 35% and the ELB increased their elbow flextion strength by 13.5%! These results don't mean you can forget about physical training, after all, the group doing the physical training increased finger abduction strength by 53%, while the control group didn't improve in any discernible way. Mentally training your muscles could help improve the the signal the cerebral cortex sends to them for increased strength and performance.
The cerebral cortex is the largest part of your brain and divided into four lobes. The frontal and parietal lobes handle movement among other tasks. Because there's no direct cortical output to muscles, it relies on neurons to transmit electrical impulses through the nervous system to contract muscles and so forth. These travel at several hundred milliseconds which is why, unless there's a defect, movement seems equal to the thought of doing it.
What this study suggests, is concentrating on the act of moving a muscle in a very specific area, can increase its strength. It's doubtful the same results would happen if you thought of your body as a whole--there's too many parts and no singular focus. It would be similar to wishing you were stronger. Perhaps you want a stronger core for dead-lift moves. What in your core is weakest? Can you feel it or do you need us to tell you what you aren't engaging? Say it's your lower abdomen. Try concentrating on what it's like contracting the muscle(s) there for 10-15 minutes a day, most days of the week, but do not stop working on your dead-lifts! This info is fascinating and hopefully an added bonus to any training that you find the most challenging.

Wedding Makeup on a Budget Everything adds up and you don't need to spend a fortune on your beauty. Firstly, don't wait until the last minute to chose the look you want for your wedding. You want your makeup to balance and compliment your dress's style; having pinup-girl looks won't work if you wear delicate, lacy couture. To save money on products, do a web search for "free makeup samples" you can order online or find at local stores (there's also coupons and rebates). Who knows? You may never have to spend much on cosmetics again. If you're absolutely terrible at applying the makeup as it should be done, enlist a friend or relative who has the touch. You can also go to a cosmetology school or make an appointment at a cosmetics counter. For more tips, check out MoneyCrashers.com.

Common Protein Powder Ingredients Decoded Protein powders vary vastly in ingredients. Some have a long list of unpronounceable words and others require no guesswork. All are pricey, depending on the manufacturer, ingredients, and how often you consume them. It's best to avoid those with a long list of what you can't say, after all, it may not be found in nature. The protein is either animal or plant derived, whey and soy being the most popular. But what are all those extras and are you eating more than what's on the label? We can't possibly cover the hundreds of enhancements manufactures use, but we'll get the main ones: Soy Lecithin, made from soy's healthy fat, it reduces clumping and improves mixing. Maltodextrin is a common additive in processed foods made from starch (corn or wheat), making it an easily digestible carbohydrate. Inulin is similar to this. Food gums are thickeners and can add stability to the product. Typically they are water soluble and made from starches. Artificial sweeteners are 200 times sweeter than sugar and cheaper to add. Even if you see agave or stevia (natural sweeteners) listed, you may also see acesulfame potassium and/or sucralose. What you don't see listed are heavy metals, such as arsenic and lead. ConsumersReports.org tested 15 protein powders "each for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. The results showed a considerable range, but levels in three products were of particular concern because consuming three servings a day could result in daily exposure to arsenic, cadmium, or lead exceeding the limits proposed by USP" (U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention). Those were: EAS Myoplex Original Rich Dark Chocolate Shake, both Muscle Milk Chocolate and Vanilla Crème (powders), and Muscle Milk Nutritional Shake Chocolate (liquid). Freaked out? Confused on what to buy? LabDoor.com tested 73 powders to make choosing the healthiest one, easier for you or try these powder-free protein smoothie recipes (not all recipes listed are powder-free). |

Pole Move of the Month:
Wrist to Shoulder Conditioning for Aerial Warm-up & RecoveryIt's important to warm-up and massage out muscles in the arms from your hands to your shoulders. If you are new to aerial workouts, like pole dancing, you may notice muscles through your arms, becoming tight. These gentle stretches and movements, in this video, will not only warm up your hands and arms for aerial, they will help you recover more quickly after the workout to prevent "t-rex" arms. Remember, overly tight muscles can lead to injuries and no one wants to experience that when it can be prevented.
