Though it's a little sad to say goodbye to another summer, there's so much to look forward to this fall--colorful leaves, cider, cozy sweaters, and of course our annual Halloween Open House/Utica Anniversary Party at our Utica location (see Events)!  When the weather gets cooler, we tend to enter a hibernation mode--exercising less, eating more comfort foods--then we struggle to take it off in the spring for swimsuit season.  This yo-yo lifestyle takes its effect on our bodies and can age it faster than you may realize.  We discuss chronological age vs. biological age and what you can do to stay as young as possible for life.  Please enjoy this and more, thank you for reading!

How Old Are You?  Chronological Age vs Biological Age    
Have you ever been jogging, biking, or rollerblading, and been passed by someone in their seventies (or older) as if you were moseying along? Just because they're a senior citizen, doesn't mean they're physically as old as their driver's license states. It also doesn't mean that someone in their twenties is at the peak of their health or youth. Obesity, chronic conditions/diseases, lifestyle, and mindset all play a part in your "true" age, because those affect cells.  Scientists even found chromosomal differences in people who appear younger or older than they are.

Your chronological age means less than your biological age. This is the age you are on a physiological level. Though not an exact science, it's a good tool to use in order to improve your health and longevity. To get the most accurate number for this, tests conducted by your doctor are best. These would include, but not limited to: blood pressure, cholesterol levels, family history, past/current medical conditions, and bone density screening. There are many tests online to give you an idea of how old you are, though many give outrageous results.  We found RealAge Test, through ShareCare.com, has the most comprehensive questions and realistic calculation.  Remember it's not an exact science and only a guide to improve your lifestyle if need be.

Testing your physical fitness is another age indicator. A biological age versus physical fitness age test found, "those who were in a state of high physical fitness maintained a relatively good biological condition. The data regarding the elderly men who had maintained a regular exercise program indicated that their estimated biological ages were considerably younger than the expected values. This might suggest that in older individuals regular physical activity may provide physiological improvements which in turn might reduce 'the rate of aging'."

Your physical fitness level will help give you an indication of your biological age.  To calculate your fitness age, LiveStrong.com has the tests for your flexibility, strength, cardio-respiratory and more.  You will need time, a few items to complete them, and possibly a friend to help record results if you find it difficult to do solo.  Poor results doesn't mean anything but room for improvement.  It's not too late to reverse your physical health and extend your life expectancy!

Complacency, "this-is-as-good-as-it-gets-so-why-bother" attitude, will ensure your physical condition deteriorates. This, now viral, video of Arthur--middle aged, obese, and disabled Vietnam veteran--is a powerful reminder to persevere no matter how much is against you. He was told he would need walking assistance for life and he believed it for 15 years until he found a trainer willing to help him. His journey was long, hard, and worth it to turn around his health and mobility, looking immensely younger by the end. It can also put any struggles you may be dealing with into perspective. A positive, push-yourself-to-improve focus isn't easy. It can be a struggle (even for those who make it look otherwise).

DIY Facials and Professional Manicures on a Budget
Your facial skin needs more TLC on a regular basis--not just for special occasions.  It's exposed the most to all kinds of weather, pollutants, and indoor environments, (not to mention, makeup) though it's not the toughest skin on your body.  It needs clean pores to release oil, exfoliation to remove dead cells, and moisturizer to reduce flakes and wrinkles.  This doesn't mean you need to head to the spa weekly--as heavenly as it would be. Nutrition for Healthy Skin
Beautiful, youthful skin is achieved by more than the tons of lotions, gels, and other topical products sold.  It's partially genetics which you can't control and also, nutrition which you can.  All the anti-aging goop in a bottle won't help your skin if you're starving it by eating processed and other nutrient-lacking foods. 

"Antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamins C, E, and A can curb the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. These molecules can harm skin cells and cause signs of aging," states WebMD.  Produce is your ally here.  Pick out the most vibrant colored fruits and vegetables and you'll get the antioxidants you need.  The antioxidants in cruciferous vegetables, like dark leafy greens, help prevent skin cancer.  You're protecting yourself further, than with sunscreen alone.  LiveSunSmart.org also reported stunning results from a study on a Mediterranean diet (fruits, vegetables, fresh herbs, olive oil, and omega-3 fatty acids) in relation to melanoma in The Journal of Epidemiology, finding it cut the risk of getting the cancer by 50%!

Omega-3 is a powerhouse antioxidant.  It's mostly known for heart health, but now we know it helps prevent cancer and it will reduce the dryness skin gets with colder weather.  The fatty acids keeps cell membranes healthy, so cells can transport nutrients in and waste out.  A strong membrane helps retain moisture.  More water, fuller cells, and therefore, less wrinkles when it comes to skin.  So if you'd like your skin's aging to slowdown, eat colorful produce and omega-3 rich foods!  Here are some recipes if you need inspiration.

AcroTOTS (ages 3-6) 4 week session starts SEPTEMBER 15th at 5:15 p.m. TUESDAYS with Pam @ UTICA.

AcroTOTS is for kids ages 3-5yrs so bring your tots to learn basic acro/gymnastic skills, conditioning and coordination to prepare them for the circus and use the hammocks and lyra too!  They will tumble, balance, climb and jump along with working on increasing flexibility and confidence!  They will have a blast!  Gymnastics attire and/or gym shorts/warm up pants/leggings and bare feet.
 
AerialKIDS is for ages 7-12yrs to learn basic acrobatic/gymnastic skills, conditioning and many amazing circus skills! Each class will include training on the circus equipment (Hammock, Silk Ribbons, Lyra, etc.) and build coordination, skills, and mini sequences to prepare them for our Fall Recital.  This class will keep them engaged while building strength, increasing flexibility and confidence!
