Leptin: the Scoop on this Hunger Suppressing Hormone!
Leptin plays an important part with your weight and any goals you have related to it. It's a hormone released by the fat cells to tell the body when it is satiated. The more adipose tissue (fat) you have, the more leptin your body makes. Exercise and food also affect leptin production. The more calories you burn in a workout, lowers the level and the more carbohydrates you eat, raises it. Also, woman produce more than men with the same body fat percentage.
When you eat, your body releases leptin. This is received by the receptors in the hypothalamus--part of the brain responsible for hormone production and management. The purpose is to tell the stomach, energy stores are replaced, so hunger is no longer needed. According to WebMD, "starvation triggers several processes within the body that drive leptin levels back up. One includes stimulation of the vagus nerve - regarded as your energy storage nerve - which runs between the brain and the abdomen". Any deficit will drop leptin, including exercise. Research from Wake Forest University found burning 900 calories raised levels more than a 200 calorie workout. Also, carbohydrates raised it more than eating fat. Why then does obesity exist if this hormone is controlling hunger? Aside from it not being the only hunger controlling hormone, bodies develop leptin resistance.
Like most anything we introduce our bodies to, it adapts or in this case, builds a resistance. The reason behind this particular resistance isn't fully known, one theory is, receptors it binds with don't function properly. According to Muscle Evo, "It appears that leptin isn't active in the part of the brain that controls eating behavior. When leptin is constantly elevated, which it will be in most overweight or obese people, the transporters that help leptin to cross from the blood into the brain become saturated. There may also be genetic causes that contribute to leptin resistance", such as with women.
Leptin is linked to fertility in women and theorized to protect the reproductive system. Which is why women produce more than men and when women experience a deficit, the levels drop but don't change in men, based on a 1997 study. A lot of energy (calories) is needed for reproduction. Harvard Medical School gave eight women, with "40% less fat than average women their age"--do to overexercising--and who had lost their periods, leptin injections. Once levels were restored to normal, six of the women's menstrual cycles returned.
This doesn't mean if you're a woman having trouble losing weight, you should throw up your hands and say, "I quit!" Authority Nutrition suggests avoid processed food, eat soluble fiber, exercise, get restful sleep, eat protein, and lower triglycerides because they can "prevent the transport of leptin from the blood into the brain". Don't let your body go into starvation mode, like we discussed last month. Eat a high protein breakfast and reduce or eliminate refined carbohydrates. Stick to whole grains, starchy vegetables, and fruits.

How to Budget a Bachelorette Party
Money can be quite tight when you're in your twenties, the age of most bachelorettes, but budget planning for the bachelorette party will ease the stress. Communicate with everyone who's invited. Listen to all their opinions and concerns so everyone feels included. Create the bride's needs vs. wants list. A need would be anything that will make her the happiest, like a limo or particular venue. And a want is something she can do without and her enjoyment won't be ruined without it. It could be anything from a stripper to matching t-shirts. A couple months before the event, RSVP. A set number of attendees is vital for the budget. Figure out costs, divide it by the number of ladies, and itemize the expenses in an email for the them. This way they know how much to contribute and where/how their money will be spent. Choose the most responsible person to handle the money. If at the end of the night there's money leftover, she will divide it equally so all get some back, unless all agree to gift it to the bride.

Foods that Make You Hungrier Do you ever wonder why you're hungrier after eating sushi or a sugar-free yogurt? Certain foods spike insulin, digest too quickly, or confuse/disrupt hormone production. Some of these you may be familiar with, like refined carbohydrates. These are plant based and have had their whole grains removed during processing, like white flour, bread, pasta, and rice. These foods have had many of their nutrients and vitamins extracted. They digest quickly and raise your blood glucose similarly to sugar. Many salty snacks fall into this category, adding to it the craving for sweets after consumption. This is called sensory specific satiety; the satisfaction of eating one food type reduces and is replaced with another craving. The pancreas makes insulin that transports the sugar from blood to cells where it can get used or stored for energy. When the cells intake the glucose rapidly this leads to a "sugar crash" characterized by fatigue, confusion, dizziness, and irritability. All signaling the body it needs more energy--more food. Other insulin "spikers" are high fructose corn syrup (read labels, it's added to everything from buns to salad dressing) and fruit juices (whole fruit is a better choice). Grabbing packages with "sugar-free" on it can be problematic. Artificial sweeteners trick the brain into thinking it's getting an energy quick-fix and insulin can spike. When it realizes it hasn't gotten it, hunger increases. Alcohol and MSG affect leptin production and function. Of course alcohol is a simple sugar that gets absorbed into the bloodstream almost immediately (another insulin spiker). New research has shown "three servings can slash your body's levels of leptin...by 30 percent"! MSG (mono-sodium glutamate) is a flavor-enhancer and believed to effect the hypothalamus. FoxNews.com published, "one animal study from Spanish researchers suggests the chemical triggers a 40 percent increase in appetite, and according to research published in the journal Obesity, people who consume the most MSG are nearly three times more likely to be overweight than those who don't eat it at all". If your diet is high in any of these, make changes to see and feel the satisfying difference. |

How to Prevent Foodborne Illnesses This Summer
With warmer weather come the joys of eating al fresco. Barbecues, picnics and outdoor eating are common when the temperature rises.
However, those higher digits also create a potential breeding ground for food bacteria. And that can bring on foodborne illnesses, which is when you get sick from consuming contaminated beverages or foods, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Here are the best ways to help prevent foodborne illnesses when eating outdoors during warm weather:

Triangle Spin
The Triangle Spin is a name we gave a pose seen often on a spin pole--the body and pole create a triangle shape. Done on a stationary pole, it makes a beautiful beginner spin. Once you feel strong and comfortable with the two handed grip, you can try it one handed as demonstrated in this video.
